Al Pacino thought The Godfather would be massive flop and ‘worst film ever made’

Al Pacino thought The Godfather was going to be a massive flop.

The 1972 epic starring Marlon Brando as mafia boss Don Vito Corleone and Pacino, now 84, as his son Michael is considered one the greatest movies of all time. But the screen icon was convinced it was going to be the “worst picture ever made”. In his new autobiography Sonny Boy, the actor said he went for drinks with co-star Diane Keaton after filming and that both reckoned it was the “end of their careers” – and thought the wedding scene at the start of the movie was “awful”.

He said: “Diane and I spent those first days laughing with each other, having to perform that opening wedding exposition scene from the screen test that we hated so much.

“On the basis of just that one scene, we were certain we were in the worst picture ever made, and when we’d finish shooting for the day, we would go back to Manhattan and get drunk. Our careers were over, we thought.”

Costing just over £5million to make, The Godfather raked more than £200m at the box office, and won three Oscars at the 1973 Academy Awards.

The hit movie also stars Diane as Michael’s wife, John Cazale as Michael’s elder brother Fredo, and James Caan as Sonny.

It comes after the Hollywood legend recalled the excruciating moment he was stuck with a “fat needle” for numbing pain after a gnarly injury on ‘The Godfather’ set.

The 84-year-old silver screen icon, best known for his role as the fiercely ambitious mob boss Michael Corleone in Francis Ford Coppola’s 1972 mafia masterpiece, recounts in his fresh memoir ‘Sonny Boy’ how a severe ankle twist almost cost him the gig that would bring an Academy Award nod.

According to revelations from his new autobiography detailed on the ‘Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend’ podcast, Al’s mishap occurred during the iconic scene where his character makes a daring escape following a tense showdown in Louis’ restaurant. Al explained: “My ankle was hurt, somehow it slipped.” Read the full story here.
