Antiques Roadshow Fiona Bruce’s love life – rarely-seen hubby to lockdown mortification

Fiona Bruce might be used to being in the public eye, having taken over presenting duties on Antiques Roadshow way back in 2008.

She’s also a familiar face on BBC news, along with shows like Fake or Fortune, Question Time and Treasures of the British Library. However, Fiona prefers to keep her private life out of the spotlight, and that includes her husband Nigel Sharrocks.

The pair tied the knot 30 years ago, in 1994. They first met at advertising agency Boase Massimo Pollitt, where Nigel was acting as the company director and Fiona was employed there. They made things official and became husband and wife in an Islington wedding ceremony in July 1994.

The happy couple went on to welcome two children – Sam, born in 1998, and Mia, born in 2001. Fiona faced backlash when she returned to work on Crimewatch just 16 days after giving birth to her daughter Mia.

Speaking at the time, Fiona said: “I am not some mad career monster. I don’t want people to think I’m setting a terribly bad example here ‒ the last thing I would advocate is women rushing back to work with a baby.”

She admitted to the Telegraph that presenting Panorama meant a lot of clock watching when her kids were still young, explaining: “There was always a point at which I thought, ‘If I leave now, I can make bathtime’, and I’d get really irritable and try to rattle through stuff.”

In 2017, she revealed that she still employed a nanny to help care for her children, telling the Daily Mail: “I know it must sound absurd but we have a nanny. Clare has been with us for 19 years. Obviously we don’t need a nanny any more, but she’s part of our family.”

Clare finally left the family while Mia was doing her GCSEs, but is still “a firm family friend”. She’s admitted that being a working mum is hard, explaining to Good Housekeeping: “I think scratch the surface of any working woman and she will always think, ‘Probably not.’ I don’t think there’s such a thing as quality time with your children. I think it’s quantity.

“But there’s never been any question that they take precedence over everything in my life, and always have done.” She added: “My kids once said, ‘What would you do if you hadn’t got us?’ I replied, ‘I’d be more successful and I’d have more friends, but I wouldn’t be as happy.'”

Though her husband Nigel is rarely pictured, Fiona does share some adorable anecdotes about her home life – including the time Nigel attempted to dye her hair. She said in 2020: “I had a complete crisis with my roots.

“Then my husband watched a video on YouTube and coloured my hair for me. He didn’t help – he did it. He will be mortified I told you that!”

The pair live together in London’s Belsize Park, but share a second home in Sydenham, Oxfordshire.
