BBC Breakfast star Carol Kirkwood opens up on her ‘hardest year’ after marriage split

Carol Kirkwood has opened up about the toughest year of her life after splitting from her first husband Jimmy Kirkwood.

Speaking on Kaye Adam’s How to Be 60 podcast, the BBC Breakfast weather presenter shared: “Probably the year I got divorced, I didn’t expect that to happen and it was shocking. It was pretty devastating at the time, but it led to better things after that.”

She added: “I think that was probably the hardest year, that or when my dad died. I was very close to my dad and he died when I was quite young and he was the apple of my eye so either of these two. For different reasons.”

Carol tied the knot with Jimmy, a well-known cricket player from Northern Ireland, when she was just 28 and starting her career at the BBC. The reason for their divorce remains a mystery as Carol prefers to keep her personal life private.

Chatting with the Loose Women star, Carol delved deeper into her separation from Jimmy, explaining how she had to learn new skills in her later years. She confessed: “It was a transition between being married and being divorced and suddenly being on your own.” Acknowledging that she got hitched quite young, Carol told Kaye that she and Jimmy divided household chores between them.

Carol shared that she felt a bit lost after her divorce as she had to handle banking for the first time in her 40s. But, she soon enjoyed the freedom of being alone and doing what she wanted.

She then met her current husband, Steve Randall, at an event with Steph McGovern. The couple got engaged in 2022 and had a small, intimate wedding in Buckinghamshire at the end of last year. After taking a break over Christmas, Carol returned to BBC Breakfast where Jon Kay asked about her wedding. She gushed at the time: “Jon I cannot tell you how fabulous it’s been!”

She added: “You shouldn’t really be talking like this about your own wedding, but it was blissful! It was romantic, it was absolutely perfect. I would not change a thing about the day. It was very small as well and intimate, so you didn’t have to worry that Auntie Nelly didn’t have a glass of sherry in her hand! It was brilliant.” When Jon teased if she had all the sherry, she laughed and replied: “Jon, you know me far too well.”
