BBC EastEnders star forced to miss filming after being stranded abroad without passport

EastEnders star Michelle Collins has been forced to miss crucial filming for the BBC soap after she was stranded in Spain without a passport.

Collins, 51, was holidaying on the Costa del Sol as she had rung in the new year, taking in the glorious Spanish sun. But her holiday dream soon turned into a nightmare as she was not able to find her passport to take her home.

Taking to social media on Monday (January 1), Michelle pleaded with airline EasyJet to help her as she stood in Málaga Airport with no documentation. Clearly flustered, she wrote: “Please EasyJet, can you help me I have lost my passport at Málaga Airport.

“The police (I have been there) say it is up to the airline to let me fly home,” she continued. “My flight is at 8:30pm tonight, I am heading to the airport having just left the police station,” before signing off.

Fans of the star were left in anxiety as Collins went off-grid for a number of hours. Later that evening, Michelle returning to give a heart-breaking update to her nearly 200k followers on X, formerly known as Twitter. Thank you most of you for your helpful comments, I wasn’t allowed to fly,” she said. “Went to the embassy, which was closed.

“Applied for an emergency document online so let’s see what happens, will go there when it opens in the morning.” She finished the update: “Supposed to be filming EastEnders, but I’m alive and safe.”

Luckily for Michelle, who plays Cindy Beale on the BBC soap, she was allowed to fly home on Tuesday (January 2) after she secured the emergency passport to take her home. However, after asking EasyJet for help, some trolls hit out at the actress for being privileged and throwing a fit because the airline would not let her on the plane “just because she’s Cindy in EastEnders”.

Collins was quick to fire back at the haters as she slammed the account: “Oh please!!!! Do you have to be so horrible? I’m not an idiot, just very stressed – indeed, happy new year to you,” she wrote.

As a result, Michelle has missed some crucial filming that was due to take place as EastEnders gears up for another tense year of storylines. Her character Cindy returned to the show in 2023 after she faked her own death back in 1998.

Despite viewers being told she had died during child-birth off-screen, Cindy stunned viewers as she made a return to the show in August. As she returned to the Square, it was revealed that she had been put into witness protection for the time being.

EastEnders airs every weekday at 7:30pm on BBC One and the BBC iPlayer
