From 1975 to 1978, Tom played Dr. Curtis Willard on The Waltons. His character was killed off the show in 1978 in the Pearl Harbor attack. However, the character was brought back in 1981 only to be played by someone else: Scott Hylands.

Tom revealed what had caused his exit, saying in a 2022 interview: “I asked for a very small raise, so they sent me to Pearl Harbor.

“Then, when they decided to bring the character back, washed up on a shore somewhere — which I didn’t think was a great idea anyway — I asked for the same small raise. … They just cast a different actor.”

Tom’s final TV appearance was in Lucky Hank in 2023. He played Bob Odenkirk’s on-screen dad Henry Devereaux Sr. but the show was canceled after one season.
