Coronation Street fans were confused after Billy Mayhew agreed to help husband Paul Foreman end his life.
Last year, Paul (Peter Ash) was diagnosed with motor neurone disease (MND). In November, The MND nurse broke the news that he only has six to 12 months left to live.
The disease has started to take its toll on Paul as he has lost the use of one of his arms. During Tuesday’s instalment (January 9) of the ITV soap, Paul begged Todd Grimshaw (Gareth Pierce) to help end his life.

Todd refused, but Paul continued toying with the idea and turned to Abi Webster (Sally Carman) for help. Knowing she has former drug associates, Paul asked if she could purchase drugs from her old dealer.
Abi initially refused, sharing her pain at losing a son and explaining she couldn’t inflict the same heartache on Paul’s mum. However, Abi had a change of heart and ended up scoring the drugs.
Unbeknownst to Abi, she was followed by Cassie Plummer (Claire Sweeney), who spilled everything to Kevin Webster (Michael Le Vell). He then passed the information on to Billy, who realised what his husband was planning.
Alone in the flat, Billy yelled at Paul and demanded to know where he was keeping the drugs. Paul insisted he had no other option but to take his own life whilst he is still in control of it.
In heartbreaking scenes, the couple discussed the situation before an emotional Billy finally agreed to not stand in Paul’s way. He even told Paul he would help him end his life when the time came.
When Paul insisted he couldn’t let his spouse do that as it goes against his beliefs, Billy pulled out the bible and vowed to help him. While fans credited the emotional scenes, others were surprised at Billy’s sudden U-turn.
One wrote: “Billy only stopped his Vicarring a couple of hours ago & he’s already gone rogue!!” A second added: “Billy proving that once again that Christianity is as flexible as a slinky.”
Another chipped in: “Well that didn’t take much.” Others branded Billy a “hypocrite” after he initially refused to help Paul, with one writing: “Billy has a short memory doesn’t he? Remember when he was high as a kite and Summer had to look after him.”
A second simply stated: “Billy is a hypocrite”. While someone else weighed in: “This the same Billy who did drugs in church is it?”
