Corrie’s Sue Cleaver in near death scare after co-star spotted worrying symptom on set

Coronation Street star Sue Cleaver has revealed how she almost died from sepsis after falling ill on the set of the ITV soap.

The actress, best known for playing Eileen Grimshaw, appeared on Loose Women on Tuesday (January 23). Sue was joined by co-panelists Ruth Langsford, Linda Robson and Brenda Edwards for the latest instalment.

One of the topics the ladies were discussing was ‘How good are you at listening to your body?’ Ruth said: “When it comes to health how good are you listening to your own body?”

Sue said: “I have definitely got better.” She then went on to reveal how she ended up getting diagnosed with sepsis after a co-star pointed out a symptom on set.

Sue opened up about her battle on Loose Women

“I happened to be working one day, we were filming a big party and there were about 20 people in the scene,” she said. Sue went on: “My colleague turned around to me.

“And it was the middle of summer and I was freezing and I didn’t feel well, and she looked at me and she said: ‘Sue your toes are black!’”

The soap star added: “I carried on filming all day, went home and I had sepsis.” The studio audience and Sue’s co-stars then gasped at her admission.

Sue previously spoke about her terrifying health scare in 2019 on This Morning. Describing her symptoms, she said: “I suffer, like many people, with IBS and I thought I was having a flare-up while I was working.

“I went in on the Tuesday and late in the afternoon I said: ‘Do you need me in this scene because I’m really not feeling great? I need to go home and sleep’. My side was sore. Then I came in the next morning at half seven. It was the hottest day of the year but I was on set with a hot water bottle.”

She then said Corrie co-star, Melanie Hill, who played Cathy Matthews, noted how her feet were purple and blue. Sue added how she felt “freezing cold”. The star continued: “I went home after lunch and got into bed and tried to go to sleep. My husband [James Quinn], who also works on Corrie, was on a night shoot and tried to ring me.

“He said: ‘Something’s not right. I can’t hear what she’s saying because your teeth are chattering too much. He came back and I was just shaking.

“He rang out daughter, who’s a paramedic who said: ‘Get her to hospital.’ My temperature was 39.9. I didn’t know I had sepsis till the next day. Immediately I was on fluids and antibiotics. There was an hour window of opportunity.”
