Emma Stone has been applauded for outstanding performances in various acclaimed films but one of the Oscar-winning actresses’ toughest moments on set actually happened during the filming of Easy-A when one scene saw her discover she suffers from a disease.
The 2010 coming-of-age comedy is a favourite among fans of the La La Land star and sees Emma playing Olive Penderghast, who lies to her best friend about her loving her virginity. But when their conversation is overhead rumours quickly spread across her high school and Olive becomes renowned for her sexual prowess.
Rather than denying accusations of being a “dirty skank”, Olive decides to take her new reputation in her stride and begins helping male students who haven’t had any luck with girls by letting them tell people they’ve had sex with her. While the raunchy rom-com centres around sex one of the most memorable scenes of the film doesn’t actually include bonking at all.

At one point Emma’s character is asked by her friend Brandon, who is gay but hasn’t come out yet, to pretend to have sex with him while at a party so people in school will stop bullying him. Sympathetic to his situation, Olive agrees and their deal results in a hilarious over-the-top charade where the two characters can be seen jumping up and down on a bed while yelling and moaning to convince other partgoers listening in that they’re doing the deed.
But filming the fake orgasm noises actually took a pretty physical toll on Emma, who discovered she suffers from asthma when the faux love-making induced an asthma attack. Having never experienced any symptoms of the chronic lung disease before, the scene marked the first time she discovered she suffers from it.
Recalling the incident to MTV while promoting the film, Emma said: “Oh, for the love, I can’t even simulate sex without dying!” She added: “I had a little asthma attack, without any prior knowledge that I had asthma, during the scene where we had to jump up and down for hours and hours screaming and yelling on the bed.”
The production team had to come to Emma’s rescue with an oxygen tank so she could recover from the hyperventilating. The actress revealed she was left pretty embarrassed about the whole ordeal.
She explained: “[It] was humiliating, because it was the second day of shooting. Here’s what it’s going to be like the whole movie, as I’m breathing into an oxygen tank. The crew was like, ‘She’s going to be a real blast. Wow. Amazing. A 20-year-old having an asthma attack'”
While the film has since been adored by millions of viewers, in 2018 Emma admitted she actually hasn’t watched it all herself. During an appearance on Variety’s Actors on Actors series, Emma explained she just couldn’t bear to watch herself.
She said: “I haven’t seen it. No, I’ve seen some scenes. But I went to a friends and family screening to see it, and I had to get up and walk out. Who wants to watch themselves for that long?”
