Emmerdale’s Robert Sugden star returns to soapland after five years away

Emmerdale’s Ryan Crawley is making his soap return – but it seems we won’t be seeing him in The Woolpack any time soon.

The actor, who was a huge favourite as Robert Sugden on the ITV soap, is set to return to our screens but this time he will be in Casualty. He will be in the show’s new boxset, Storm Damage, which starts on June 15.

The actor will play Jamie Cleveland, a member of the board at Holby City Hospital. According to the BBC, the episode will see a tragedy forcing Cam (Barney Walsh) to “make a tough decision” as a storm threatens Holby. Meanwhile, Stevie (Elinor Lawless) will make an unexpected connection and Tariq (Manpreet Bachu) tries to help out Rash (Neet Mohan).

Ryan had joined Emmerdale in 2014 as Robert. The character was a big favourite with viewers, who loved his romance with Aaron Dingle (Danny Miller) and dubbed the pair “RobRon”.

However, he waved goodbye to the village in 2019 when his soap alter ego was locked up for murdering Lee Posner (Kris Mochrie), the man who attacked his half-sister Victoria (Isabel Hodgins).

Ryan was jailed for 14 years, suggesting viewers won’t see him back in the Dales any time soon. However, there has been a lot of speculation about whether he will reprise the role and it gathered pace earlier this year when Robert was suddenly mentioned. Victoria brought him up during a chat with Aaron, telling him that his ex was “doing OK”.

There were more rumours when the soap shared a few snaps of the Mill flat, which is Aaron’s pad. A message on X included a string of shots of the apartment, and some viewers thought that it could be a secret sign that Ryan was going to return at some point and that RobRon would reunite and live there together, happily ever after.

Ryan, 38, has kept busy since he left Emmerdale, and has appeared in some TV shows. He played a character named Michael Robson in a couple of episodes of crime drama Silent Witness in 2021. And last year he popped up in the All Creatures Great And Small, as a character called Sid Crabtree.
