Gladiators’ icon mutes new series minutes in after ‘torturous’ change

Gladiators Cobra star Michael Wilson was forced to mute the show as he tuned in for the reboot.

The 90s TV star claimed the theme tune is so “torturous” that he can’t stand to listen to it anymore. Talking to the Daily Star, he said: “Oh, you know what’s bad, the theme song…

“It’s like grating your fingers down the blackboard because everywhere we went they’d play it. Even in panto, I’d be two/three times a day, even now when I do personal appearances, my god, it’s torture.

“When I watched it the other day, I had to put the mute on, I couldn’t handle it. I had to mute it straight away.”

Michael recalled his time on the show during its heyday and said he once bumped into a celebrity backstage. The Glad remembered meeting the new host of the show Bradley Walsh – but before he was famous.

As the show used to gather a lot of fans, many of whom tried to sneak in to meet the cast, he thought Bradley was one of them. However, it turned out Brad was there for a legitimate reason, as he was dating one of the show’s cheerleaders.

Cobra explained: “Yeah, well, Bradley was married or had started dating our head cheerleader Donna Derby. The cheerleaders used to hype the crowd up and get the kids down and be great with the audience participating and happy.”

“I first met Bradley before he was famous backstage, with his daughter from a previous relationship, I thought he was a nut case trying to sneak in and break into the arena, I went up to him and said ‘What you doing?’ and he said ‘Oh I’m Donna’s boyfriend’.

“Then he was there all the time and he even ended up doing Celebrity Gladiators. He’s a nice bloke – and there’s a fantastic connection to the show there.”
