The Golden Globes returned for another year of recognising some of the best titles in US TV and film.
Though the limelight wasn’t just put on the accolades of the night – but also some of the behind-the-scenes drama. This year, some of the A-listers were caught on camera in awkward moments.
Let’s take a look at some of the most controversial ones…
Jennifer Lawrence threat
To begin with, Hunger Games icon Jennifer Lawrence joked she would leave the event if she wasn’t picked for the award. The actress, 33, mouthed, “If I don’t win, I’m leaving,” when her name was called for the ‘Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy’.
However, Jen did not take the award home and instead, her showbiz pal Emma Stone took home the bacon. Funnily enough, Jennifer didn’t leave the show and stayed put in her chair and she enthusiastically cheered on Emma.
She could then be seen screaming out “Mother!” in a keen act of support for her pal who won for her performance in Poor Things.
Taylor Swift glare
Love Story singer Taylor Swift became the butt of one of Golden Globes’ host Jo Koy’s gags on Sunday night – and didn’t look too impressed. Taylor, 34, whose concert film The Eras Tour movie was up for an award in the new Cinematic and Box Office Achievement category, wasn’t very pleased about the comment made about her.
The star’s film lost to Barbie but this didn’t appear to phase Taylor who was enjoying a glass of champagne before Koy’s jibe about her relationship with Travis Kelce, 34. The host said: “Welcome back. As you know, we came on after a football doubleheader.
“The big difference between the Golden Globes and the NFL – on the Golden Globes fewer camera shots of Taylor Swift.” The camera then panned to Taylor sipping her drink but she made she not to crack a smile.
Fans commented on the moment online, with one writing: “Cause of death for Jo Koy: That look Taylor Swift gave him as she sipped her drink.” A second added: “Does the fool who’s hosting the Golden Globes and just made a joke about Taylor Swift realize millions of viewers had to Google who the hell is Jo Koy!???”
While a third penned: “Oh Joe… don’t come for Ms.Swift ! *takes sip*” A fourth posted: “Agree. Uncomfortable laughter. And using Taylor Swift in a joke that stopped being funny months ago was a cheap shot. That joke just didn’t make sense and wasn’t funny. why tf u bringing up the NFL only to talk about Taylor Swift!”
Epstein joke
The atmosphere at the 2024 awards also took a nosedive when a presenter tried to make a joke about Jeffrey Epstein. Comedian Jim Caffigan mentioned the term “paedophile” in his introduction and made the crowd feel uneasy with some forced awkward laughs being heard at the time.
He said: “This is so exciting for me. I can’t even believe I’m in the entertainment industry. It’s so unlikely – I’m from a small town in Indiana, I’m not a pedophile…I don’t know if that’s a new category here, but…”
With all of the Epstein information still coming to light, fans at home also didn’t find this nod very funny either.
Selena Gomez snub
Arguably one of the juciest moments of the night was when Selena Gomez was caught on camera chatting to her best pal Taylor Swift about an encounter she just had. Fans believe they have worked out what she is saying to her pal – and shared their theories online.
In a clip video from the ceremony, Selena and Taylor can be seen gossiping during an ad break. Fans think Disney star Selena seemed to be saying that she asked Dune actor Timothee Chalamet for a selfie but his girlfriend Kylie Jenner told her wouldn’t let her.
Taylor can be seen with her mouth wide open looking shocked at what her pal had just told her. One viewer wrote online: “‘I asked for a picture with him and she (kylie jenner) said no’ – selena gomez. ‘with timothee?’ *selena nods*”
A second added: “‘But she said no,’ Selena could be seen telling Taylor, who gave an understandbly shocked reaction. some #GoldenGlobes tea.”
