Ian Hislop was in a black cab hit by a suspected bullet.

The Have I Got News for You star and editor of Private Eye was in the back of a taxi in London’s Soho just after 10am on Tuesday morning when a suspected gunshot hit the back window. His taxi driver told Scotland Yard detectives he heard what he believed to be a bullet hitting and damaging the window.

The frightening incident occurred on Dean Street, near Oxford Street, which is close to the Private Eye office. But luckily Hislop, 64, and the driver escaped without injuries, reports The Guardian.

Scotland Yard is investigating the suspected gunshot and a source told the outlet police are reportedly “keeping an open mind as to any motive”. Roads were closed around the scene as officers searched the area and CCTV will be examined.

A Met Police spokesman told the publication: “Police were called at 10.10am on Tuesday, 1 October to a report of a firearms discharge on Dean Street, Westminster.

“The driver of a London black taxi reported he was stationary in traffic when a shot was fired towards his vehicle, striking the window. There were no injuries. An investigation has been launched.”

Hislop has been Private Eye editor since 1986. The iconic weekly political magazine is famed for its satirical pieces and investigations.

He has also been a regular panellist and team captain on the BBC’s comedy quiz show Have I Got News for You since 1990. He’s known for his razor-sharp quick wit on the programme, which pokes fun at the top stories of the week and often the government.
