‘I saw something amazing in the sky with John Lennon – I couldn’t believe what happened next’

John Lennon’s former lover May Pang remains convinced the pair saw a UFO more than 50 years since the strange incident happened.

After first meeting while working as his personal assistant, May Pang started dating John Lennon in 1973 after he split with his wife, Yoko Ono.

Despite their whirlwind relationship, there is one night that will always stand out for May. She said:”John and I saw a UFO off our balcony where we lived in New York City. We were so amazed because we knew what we were seeing.”

Recalling how that night unfolded, May said: “We were not high like most people would think. I was actually waiting for the pizza guy to deliver our pizza. And he (John Lennon) saw this thing and said ‘oh it’s a flashing light’ and I thought it’s the ‘Broadway lights’ and then he went ‘wait a minute, we live in a residential area, where have these lights come from?’.

John, keen to make sure that he wasn’t the only one witnessing the peculiar flying object, ushered May over to join him on the balcony and she could not believe what she was seeing: “I looked up and said ‘oh my god’ and he said ‘are you seeing what I’m seeing?’. And the thing was only like two to three storeys above our heads.”

The pair weren’t the only ones to make the bizarre discovery that night, as May said that others in the same apartment block also ‘made reports’.

The bizarre event had such an affect on the Beatles singer that he later decided to document what had happened in his ‘Walls and Bridges’ album, where he wrote “On the 23rd Aug. 1974 at 9 o’clock I saw a U.F.O.” in the lyric booklet.

After his 18-month romance with May ended, John continued his previous relationship with Yoko Ono, with the couple giving birth to their first child, Sean in October 1975. The family would continue living in New York until his death on 8 December 1980 when he was killed by Mark David Chapman outside of his home.

In the years since, May has gone on to document their romance, releasing two books and most recently the ‘The Lost Weekend: A Love Story’, a feature length documentary about their time together.
