Inside Eamonn Holmes’ first marriage to wife he ‘needed’ but who ‘grew distant’

The news of Eamonn Holmes and Ruth Langsford separating after 14 years of marriage has left their fans gobsmacked – but it’s not Eamonn’s first rodeo.

The TV duo were notorious for their candid on-air arguments, but insisted they showed their mutual affection. This is not Eamonn’s first encounter with divorce; he was previously married to Gabrielle, sharing three children together. Details about his first wife are slim, but reports suggest that they fell madly in love after meeting in 1976.

Their love story didn’t last, leading to a split in 1996. While Eamonn maintains an “amicable divorce”, it wasn’t smooth sailing when the pair realised their marriage was falling apart.

In his 2008 autobiography, This Is My Life: The Autobiography, Eamonn hinted at Gabrielle growing distant following the death of his father. He expressed: “Gabrielle was increasingly indifferent and I didn’t know why. I needed her close, I needed her to reach me and ease my pain, but she had concerns of her own, principal of which was an impending birth.”

Eamonn and Gabrielle share three children – Declan, Rebecca and Niall. Eamonn also has a son named Jack with Ruth.

He has since expressed that his work was a contributing factor to their break up. His work had him away during the weekdays which wasn’t an issue for him but, according to him, seemed troubling for Gabrielle.

He commented back then: “That was the first time I realised there wasn’t that emotional support there for me, though I probably had suspected it.”

Eamonn further elaborated: “By that stage we tended to be apart during the week because of my job, and I had no trouble with that – though Gabrielle obviously did.I always believed absence would make the heart grow fonder and, in fact, the commuting heightened my desperation for her, made the time less bearable and longer. But it gave my wife a life of her own, with her children, and come weekends I was intruding on it, y’know.”

Eamonn first crossed paths with Ruth in 1997 but took things slow out of consideration for Gabrielle and their kids. In 2002, Ruth and Eamonn welcomed their son Jack and exchanged vows eight years later.

Recently, via their representatives, both Ruth and Eamonn announced their decision to part way. There was a confirmation that stated: “Ruth Langsford and Eamonn Holmes have confirmed their marriage is over and they are in the process of divorcing.”

Fans have been growing increasingly worried about the duo, who have been co-hosts on ITV’s This Morning for a considerable period, due to their noticeable absence from each other’s social media posts. Ruth hasn’t shared anything about Eamonn on her platforms for two years.

However, eyebrows were raised recently when Eamonn posted a cosy snap with ex-page 3 model Linda Lusardi, leading followers to question, “So where is Ruth?”
