John Cleese teams up with Hollywood legend Arnold Schwarzenegger in new TV show

John Cleese is set to team up with movie hardman Arnold Schwarzenegger for a new star-studded TV show.

The Fawlty Towers legend, 84, has revealed he has written a script for a sitcom titled Lookalikes. His new show is thought to follow a bunch of wannabe actors who earn a living because they look like some of the biggest A list celebs seen on the silver screen.

But in a wacky twist, the actor has enlisted a host of big names to play the lookalikes on the show. One of the stars who have been given early access to the script includes Terminator legend Arnold, 76.

Speaking about his new project with the Hollywood star on Radio 2, John said: “My daughter Camilla and I came up with the idea for Lookalikes, a show about these people who stand on Sunset Boulevard in Los Angeles pretending to be famous stars.

“Somebody else then came up with the great idea of getting real superstars to play the lookalikes in the comedy… people like Arnold Schwarzenegger. And the script is with him at the moment.”

John is hoping his new show will be a huge hit with viewers and will help him secure bigger names in the future. But this isn’t the only script the actor is working on at the moment.

He is also working on a new series of Fawlty Towers more than 40 years after the show came to an end. His sitcom has also been turned into a play which has danced the boards in London’s West End.

The show opened for the first time last week and has already received rave reviews from critics online. The dad-of-two reunited with his Monty Python co-stars Michael Palin and Terry Gilliam at the press night for the Fawlty Towers West End show.

The beloved sitcom – created by Cleese and his ex-wife Connie Booth – is getting a limited West End run after being redeveloped into a stage play. Cleese helped to fuse three classic episodes into a two-hour play, which opened at the London’s Apollo Theatre on May 4.

He was all smiles as he posed for photos with Palin and Gilliam who showed their support to their former troupe member. This time, the role of Fawlty is being played by actor Adam Jackson-Smith.

Cleese recently told The Standard that him reprising the role at 84 was never going to be an option. He confessed to the publication: “It would kill me.

“Honestly, I had to get fit when we filmed Fawlty Towers and go for runs because of the amount of energy it used to take out of me, just the movements, keeping every muscle in your body stressed was very tiring.

“That’s the only way you can play Basil, to use every muscle in your body so you can’t play him relaxed, it would never work – especially now I’ve had two hip replacements, a new knee, a bone spur and now I suffer from vertigo.”
