Love Island’s most complained about moments – uncontrollable tears and straddle scene

ITV’s hit dating show Love Island is well and truly underway with a fresh batch of singletons ready to find romance in the sweltering heat.

So far, this series has already produced immense twists and potential love triangles as fans get acquainted with the show’s new stars. But as all avid viewers know, Love Island is also responsible for intense TV drama which often leads to complaints.

Over the years, the ITV programme has racked up Ofcom complaints from viewers who have been unimpressed with what they’ve seen. And some of the moments have gone down in TV history.

Whether that be Amy Hart’s outburst or Dani Dyer’s tears, Love Island has produced a number of hair raising scenes. As the new series begins to heat up, Daily Star has taken a look at some of the most complained moments.

Amy Hart

Amy Hart’s emotional breakdown in 2019 was one to note after she returned from Casa Amor to find her ‘half boyfriend’ Curtis Pritchard entwined with another. She learned he’d tried to pursue a connection with someone else, which led to 314 complaints from viewers concerned about her welfare. Her line, “I was coming here to tell you I loved you!” has since become a Love Island classic.

Later on in the series, Curtis moved on again with brunette bombshell Maura Higgins. Still heartbroken by it all, Amy later eliminated herself from the process. But Amy’s love story after the show has been adorable as she is currently engaged to her partner Sam Rason and they share one child together.

Dani Dyer

In 2018, Dani Dyer was shown footage of her then boyfriend Jack Fincham appearing ready to cheat on her in Casa Amor. Although the footage looked alarming – it actually wasn’t the truth.

Heading over to the Beach Hut in floods of tears, Dani cried her heart out. Her distress was difficult to watch, and Ofcom received 2,644 complaints over concerns that the situation had been manipulated for entertainment, at the expense of fan favourite Dani’s feelings.

Maura Higgins

Maura Higgins was one of the most unforgettable bombshells from series five. In the show, she immediately set her sights on Tommy Fury, who was coupled up with Molly-Mae Hague. However, viewers were less impressed when she straddled him on the daybed and attempted to force a kiss. This led to 709 complaints about ‘sexual harassment’.

Faye Winter

Fans disliked Faye shouting at Teddy

Faye Winter’s reaction was very unexpected when she lost her temper at a bewildered Teddy Soares upon his return to the main villa from Casa Amor. The ensuing argument, which saw Faye shouting and swearing at Teddy, received an astounding 24,763 complaints and led a male domestic abuse charity to label her behaviour as “unacceptable”.

Many questioned whether a man behaving similarly would have been allowed to stay in the villa. This then sparked an online discussion about broader abusive relationships.

Luca Bish

The Movie Night footage in 2022 sparked a massive backlash, with nearly 4,000 Ofcom complaints about the boys’ ‘misogynistic and controlling’ behaviour. Women’s Aid even issued a statement regarding the treatment of the girls in the villa.

However, the most shocking behaviour came from Luca Bish. At the time, he came across as incredibly nasty to his partner Gemma Owen after he witnessed her merely talking to newcomer Billy Brown. Luca accused Gemma of “entertaining his flirting”. But Gemma denied it and said she was only trying to be nice.

Snog, Marry, Pie

Snog, marry, pie sparked concerns from viewers

Love Island faced a surge of Ofcom complaints following the Snog, Marry, Pie challenge in 2022. Just days after Movie Night, over 1,500 complaints were lodged following the challenge where Tasha Ghouri seemed to be targeted once again.

An Ofcom spokesperson stated: “On July 19 the majority of complaints were about alleged misogynistic behaviour from the male islanders towards the female islanders Including in the aftermath of the Snog, Marry, Pie challenge.”
