‘Most frightening horror film ever’ has gruesome scene that left fans ‘traumatised’

A terrifying horror film scene has been labelled as the ‘most frightening ever’ by fans, and it might not be one you’re familiar with.

Film enthusiasts have been discussing and ranking the opening scenes of various horror films in a bid to determine the most terrifying. Usual suspects like Nightmare on Elm Street and Halloween often top the list, but this time, an obscure supernatural film from 2002 has taken the crown, with viewers claiming it left them “traumatised”.

Ghost Ship, featuring The Good Wife’s Julianna Marguiles, begins with a crowd of people dancing on the deck of a ship. The elegant guests are enjoying themselves until a cable whips through the crowd, slicing through the party-goers.

In horrifying scenes, people start falling to the ground one by one as it becomes apparent that nearly everyone was cut by the wire. One woman was bisected at the waist while dancing, while another guest drags themselves across the floor, oblivious to the fact they only have half a body.

In a chilling scene, the last guest standing is a little girl who was dancing with the captain before the deadly wire struck. She looks up to find the cable has sliced through his face, leaving a bloody gash from ear to ear that eerily resembles a gruesome smile, reports the Mirror.

As blood oozes from his mouth, the top half of his head slides off and lands on the floor in front of the horrified child.

One viewer shared their thoughts about the film on Reddit, which was voted as having the most terrifying opening scene on ranker.com: “The beginning of Ghost Ship really freaked me out when I was younger. Found this movie in my moms room on VHS on top of her dresser when I was a kid. I put it on and the beginning scene literally traumatised me, I had never seen anything like that before. Why does anyone bother debating which movie has the best opening scene when we all know it’s 2002’s Ghost Ship.”

Another viewer praised the horrifying scene on X, stating: “The opening scene of Ghost Ship should be taught in film school. By far one of the BEST opening scenes to a horror movie! “.

Fans said they’d “never seen anything like it before”

The remainder of the film takes place 40 years later, where a salvage crew stumbles upon the long-lost 1962 passenger ship floating lifelessly in a remote region of the Bering Sea. They soon realise that its long-deceased inhabitants may still be haunting the ship.

Despite a spectacular opening sequence, numerous fans believe the film didnt maintain this momentum after the first eight minutes. Sharing their thoughts on X, one viewer said: “That movie could have been an eight-minute short and it would’ve been perfect.”

Viewers were left in front of a horrifying massacre scene

A second added: “The opening of that film was almost perfect, and then…the rest of it happens.”

Meanwhile, a third noted: “The biggest mistake that movie made was having one of the BEST opening scenes in a horror movie ever, there was no way the rest of the film could live up to that awesome sequence.”
