Salma Hayek ‘sobbed’ during first nude scene and ‘refused to drop towel’

Salma Hayek confessed she broke down in tears filming her first ever nude scene – and was too scared to drop her towel.

That scene came in 1995’s Desperado, which she found “traumatising”. Working with Puss in Boots star Antonio Banderas, she broke down in tears when the time came to take off their clothes. She explained: “We were going to start shooting, I started to sob. I said, ‘I don’t know that I can do it. I’m afraid’.

“One of the things I was afraid of was Antonio – he was an absolute gentleman and so nice, and we’re still super close friends – but he was very free. t scared me that for him, it was like nothing. I started crying, and he was like, ‘Oh my God. You’re making me feel terrible.’ And I was so embarrassed that I was crying.”

Thankfully, Antonio cracked enough jokes to make Salma laugh, which helped her battle the nerves and finally remove her towel – though she began crying again and covered up several times. She confessed: “We got through it. We did the best with what we could do at the time.”

It frightened her that her family members would see her naked, explaining: “When you’re not you, then you can do it. But I keep thinking of my father and my brother… And are they going to see it? And are they going to get teased? Guys don’t have that. Your father will be, ‘Yeah! That’s my son!’”

Regardless, she did take her family to see the film – but walked out of the premiere when the time came for her to strip. She told the Armchair Expert Podcast: “I walked out of the premiere when they played it and I took my brother, father, and mother with me. I didn’t want any of them to see it. They were happy to walk out right away and then we came back again. I don’t think they noticed anything.”

More than a decade later, she was still “nervous” to film a sex scene as she was used to the “wandering eyes” of co-stars.

But thankfully her Ask the Dust co-star Colin Farrell helped to break the tension – and was a perfect gentleman. Back in 2006 when the film was initially released, Salma confessed that her nerves were quelled somewhat with the help of Colin.

“He ran out of the trailer completely naked. We all screamed and then we started laughing. It was such a shock. He made such a fool of himself, he was running around, but it took the stigma out of it somehow,” she said.

Salma went on: “While we were doing [the nude scenes], his eyes never left mine. He never looked down once. Sometimes I’m dressed and I have conversations with people and their eyes wander.”

The scene proved difficult to shoot because of the weather conditions, as she explained to Radio Free: “It was freezing. Freezing, unbearable, cold. And I got a little bit of hypothermia. They were really careful. We had to take special drinks that would keep our body heated. I mean, we had to prepare physically to do the scene because it was so cold.

“I act comfortable, but I was not. And as a matter of fact, I was really nervous because this is not the one scene that I wanted to do, you know, and it was cold.”
