Shaun Ryder has revealed he’s only got about “10 years left” to live.
The Happy Mondays singer has started to think about the end of his life after singing up to a new TV show titled Celebrity Send Off. On the show, he stars alongside his bandmate Bez who helps plan his funeral.
The Channel 4 concept will see famous faces plan their loved one’s funeral with help from Co-op Funeralcare experts. Shaun and Bez kick off the series after they admitted they “had never thought about having a funeral or dying”.

Shaun, 61, said filming the show has changed his mindset around death and made him consider things that he’s never thought about. he said: “I don’t know if I’d have a quiet one or a party. I’ve never even thought about having a funeral or dying!
“I’ve got 10 years left, maybe 15, so I should be thinking about it. My dad was dead by 74 and our kid is already dead,” he says as he refers, referring to his late brother and bandmate Paul, who passed away in 2022 aged 58.
He added: “It seemed a bit macabre, a bit on the dark side, but me and Bez were up for it straight away. Although my kids and the missus thought it was a bit mad!”
Bez opted for a ‘UFO-themed’ funeral to pay tribute to Shaun’s experiences with extraterrestrial life. He chose spaceship-shaped flowers and decided to blast Shaun’s ashes off into space by strapping them to fireworks.
Shaun commented on his choice and said: “I wouldn’t mind going up into the sky like a UFO – but I want to be buried. I’m not getting cremated.”
Talking further about his alien encounters, he added: “I woke up one morning, about seven, and I looked out of the window and there was a UFO by our apple tree,” he says. “I could have been hallucinating but I hadn’t taken any drugs! It looked like a giant Airfix model. Since I was 15, they haven’t left me alone. It might be because I’m neurodivergent – I’ve got ADHD.”
