Sister Sledge icon Kathy Sledge felt huge “pressure” during the group’s early days.
In an exclusive interview with Daily Star, the music legend revealed that being Sister Sledge’s lead singer was “challenging,” especially during the height of their fame after the release of We Are Family.
She explained: “When you have a song like We Are Family, certainly there are challenges, jealousies. Through the adversity I have learned to come back so strong. Are we still family? Of course, but sometimes there are challenges working together.”

Kathy admitted that before leaving the group, the hardest part about working together was learning to navigate superstardom as the youngest member: “The most challenging thing growing up in a group [was] being the youngest and being the lead singer. I’ve learned so much about the art form of it and the business part of it too.”
“At the end of the day you feel responsible, you feel guilty when you’re asked to sing everything all the time, but most importantly you are a significant voice and when you embrace that – especially when people show you that you are – you have to walk in those shoes.”
The singer admitted she felt a lot of pressure due to her role in the group and once debated talking about her troubles with the King of Pop. Kathy confessed: “We were touring with Michael Jackson and his brothers, but I remember I wanted to go up to him – because we were both little kids – and say: ‘Do you go through what I go through?’ I was too shy to ask him that.”
Kathy will be performing at Uptown Festival in Cardiff on 15 September and told Daily Star that she is “hyped” to be back on stage performing “authentically”. The festival will be taking place in Bute Park and fans of Kathy Sledge can get their hands on tickets here.
