Amanda Abbington was left in tears as she made her return to acting after the Strictly debacle.
Amanda, 50, made her grand return to the acting scene as she debuted her new play When it Happens to You at the Park Theatre in London on Wednesday (July 31). The show had been promoted by Amanda across ITV and Channel 4, in an attempt for the Sherlock actress to move past her Strictly past.
The theatre was packed with fans of the star, as well as play lovers, as the show tells the harrowing story of betrayal and debauchery. However, by the end of the show, Amanda was left in tears as the audience gave her a standing ovation – with not a dry eye in the house, according to The Mirror.

Based in Finsbury Park in north London, the show was filled with drama, intrigue and darkness – but eventually dealt with issues of trauma and emerging from it. This is not far off what has happened with the actress herself, after she quit the BBC show after five weeks of the competition.
Amanda was the first celebrity to publicly claim that she had been the victim of abuse and misconduct during training at the hands of professional partner Giovanni Pernice. She added that the experience was so harrowing for her, that she was later diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder.
Giovanni himself has been quick to deny all claims made against him by Amanda and subsequent stars including Laura Whitmore and Ranvir Singh. He has since instructed a top lawyer to defend him from all claims, and has said he is “looking forward to clearing his name”.
While the results of the BBC probe are due to be released soon, Amanda seemed far away from the drama as she began her new project. Many audience members praised the star for being able to carry on amid the ongoing legal drama, commending her “strength” and “willpower” for doing so.
Actress Amanda led the cast out in the show, which sees a family forever changed by one horrific event, exploring how far people will go to protect their loved ones. Filled with love, hope and heaps of tears, the show has been lauded by critics and ticket-goers alike as a must-see.
It comes after Amanda bravely opened up on the torrents of abuse she has been receiving after coming forward with the allegations. In a strikingly candid interview with Channel 4 News, she detailed the horrific rape and death threats that were hurled at her and her family.
“Brutal, relentless, unforgiving… rape threats to myself and my daughter and threats of death to my son,” she explained. However, in a separate interview with Christine Lampard on Lorraine Kelly’s ITV show, Amanda insisted she did not go public to go after Giovanni, but rather to raise awareness of questionable workplace practices.
