Tony Award winner and Mary Poppins star Glynis Johns dies of ‘natural causes’ aged 100

Mary Poppins actress Glynis John has died aged 100.

The actress, who played Mrs Winifred Banks in the hit Disney movie alongside Julie Andrews, was living in West Hollywood at the time of her death, according to her publicist Mitch Clem who confirmed her passing to Los Angeles ABC affiliate KABC. He added that the star died of “natural causes”.

Glynis was said to have been recruited by Walt Disney himself to play Mrs Banks in which she sang the song Sister Suffragette. Before playing the iconic role, she appeared two other Disney movies;The Sword and the Rose and Rob Roy: The Highland Rogue.

She went on to receive an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress for her work in the 1960 film The Sundowners. In addition to her film work, Glynis won a Tony Award winner for originating the role of Desiree Armfeldt in Stephen Sondheim’s A Little Night Music. Sondheim wrote the character’s signature song, Send in the Clowns, just for Johns

Fans has since taken to social media to pay tribute to the stage and screen legend, with one fan writing on X, formerly known as Twitter: “Rest in Peace Glynis Johns, thanks for bringing joy to my gay little life.” Another added: “Sondheim wrote Send in the Clowns specifically for her. A true musical theatre actor and a legend. RIP Glynis Johns. The night smiles for you.”

Someone else penned: “Very sad to hear of the death of the wonderful Welsh actress and singer, Glynis Johns at the age of 100. She was one of the last surviving major stars from the Golden Age of Hollywood. #Sondheim wrote, ‘Send in the Clowns’ for Johns’ unique voice. RIP.”

Born in South Africa in 1923, Glynis was the daughter of concert pianist Alys Steele and actor Mervyn Johns. She began her career in England, appearing in her first film at age 13 and taking on the title role in a stage production of Peter Pan at age 19. Early on in her career, the actress appeared in three films as a flirtatious mermaid in Miranda Helter Skelter and Mad About Men. Her final two films were While You Were Sleeping and Superstar.

She also appeared in various television shows, including the last season of Batman on ABC and NBC’s sitcom Cheers as Diane Chambers’ mother Helen Chambers, an eccentric dowager who, due to a stipulation in Diane’s late father’s will, will lose all her money unless Diane is married by the next day. Following the death of Olivia de Havilland in 2020, she became Britain’s oldest living star of stage and screen.

She was married four times and Johns leaves and was a mother to Gareth Forwood and grandmother to Thomas Forwood, a French writer and film director.
