TV icon Ulrika Jonsson has shared that she will be spending Christmas Day alone this year, as she says it feels ‘right’ and ‘perhaps needed’ after a tough year
Ulrika Jonsson has opened up about her plans to spend Christmas alone this year. The 57-year-old Swedish-British TV personality confessed that 2024 has been “a year of massive change” for her, during which she battled with alcohol addiction.
She revealed that she would often drink until she blacked out, using alcohol as a coping mechanism for anxiety. Her friends grew worried when she was unable to engage in conversations with them. The star has since given up drinking and has maintained her sobriety for over six months. In a heart-breaking admission, Ulrika confessed that there were times when she wasn’t sure if she would make it to Christmas.
She realised that “discovered that alcohol was not the solution” and that she needed to make changes in her life to continue.
“So, it felt apt that I should spend Christmas Day on my own,” she shared with The Sun. “Not to wallow in some kind of perverse, self-indulgent pity-party but just because it will be nice to have a break from people-ing and life-ing.”
Ulrika made it clear: “No, I haven’t been deserted or rejected by family or friends and by no stretch of the imagination am I a tragic, forlorn character.”
Ulrika Jonsson has candidly expressed her choice to spend Christmas Day solo, stating she’s not “shunning the family” nor seeking pity. She feels that spending the day alone “just feels right” and is “perhaps needed”.

The mother of four plans a day with “some fresh air – if the heavens allow – filthy food, lighting fragrant candles, some streaming, which most definitely will include Gavin and Stacey, and then I intend on just being.”
While Ulrika will be joined by three of her children on Christmas Eve, her fourth child works overseas. She emphasised that she’ll be “alone but I won’t be lonely”.
The television presenter, who first became known as a weather presenter in the late ’80s, has previously opened up about her journey to sobriety. After posting an image of herself while intoxicated to underscore the negative impact of alcohol, Ulrika shared: “Today I am 6 months sober. On the 5th June 2024, I had the gift of desperation and reached out for help. I no longer recognised myself and I surrendered.”
