Adolescence has a “haunting” detail that viewers may have missed.

The harrowing Netflix drama starring Stephen Graham and Ashley Walters tells the story of 13-year-old Jamie Miller (played by rising star Owen Cooper), who is arrested for stabbing classmate Katie (Emilia Holliday) to death. As police look into what happened, they interview Jamie as well as his teachers and some of his classmates, and fans get to see the impact of the crime.

The damage to Jamie’s family is also explored. Moving scenes show dad Eddie (Stephen), mum Manda (Christine Tremarco) and sister Lisa (Amélie Pease) struggling as they try to come to terms with what happened.

Jamie’s motives are examined in an entire episode in which he talks to clinical psychologist, Briony (Erin Doherty). She visits him where he is being held and delves into what happened in chilling scenes.

At first watch it seems that the voice that isn’t heard is that of murder victim Katie herself. The crime has already taken place when the series starts, and her family are not shown.

Police officer Misha Frank (Faye Marsay) says herself in episode two: “Katie isn’t important. Jamie is. Everyone will remember Jamie. No one will remember her. That’s what annoys me. That’s what gets to me.”

However, one viewer has now revealed that this isn’t the case as the girl who plays murder victim Katie Leonard sings on the soundtrack. TikTok user @indigoreports uploaded a message about the series, in which she said Katie was actually present all along.

“Throughout the show we don’t ever get to hear from Katie,” she said. “However the haunting secret detail is that Katie is actually talking to us throughout the show in her own way through the soundtrack.

“That’s because a lot of the songs on the soundtrack are actually sung by Katie herself. It is really as close as we ever get to hearing from her and the director.”

She went on: “This just gives the show a much deeper meaning. Knowing that Katie was essentially a part of the whole thing and expressing herself through the music.”

Director Philip Barantini has said that the team wanted to make sure that Katie’s voice was heard. Adolescence ends with a rendition of Aurora’s Through The Eyes Of A Child, and Katie star Emilia performs lead vocals.

“The voice in the score is Katie’s voice,” the director told Netflix outlet Tudum. “Katie is a part of the whole series. Her presence is always there.”

Netflix has also posted a message on X saying that Emilia sang in episode two. The emotional scene saw Jamie’s dad going to lay flowers in the car park here Katie was killed.

“The girl who sings at the end of Episode 2 is the actor who plays the victim, Katie Leonard,” the post said.
