TV’s Adrian Chiles has revealed that he hates PIGEONS… and even checked out the law to find out if he could kill them.
The 58-year-old former One Show, Daybreak and Match of the Day 2 presenter confessed that the birds ‘terrorised’ him – and have done for his whole life.
He said their poo blocks up the drains at his home in Chiswick, West London, and he has to clean it out by hand. The Radio 5 Live broadcaster said pigeons were ‘appalling things’, adding: “For years they’ve been getting into a drainage channel on the roof. Morning, noon and night they scratch and coo and jump about.
“The racket is infernal. I lie in bed reflecting on the filth in that gully just above my head.
“I know it’s filthy, because when there’s heavy rain their revolting detritus washes down and blocks the downpipe.
“I have to pull their unspeakable waste out of the pipe before something bursts and floods.
“There are no words to describe the tangle of excrement, nesting materials, eggs, feathers and bones.”
The dad-of-two said he looked up how to ‘get rid’ of pigeons, but found out they were ‘protected’ by law and that he wasn’t allowed to poison them.
Under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 it is illegal to ‘intentionally kill, injure, or take pigeons, damage or destroy their nests, or take or destroy their eggs, unless under specific licenses’.
He added: “I scrolled down the RSPB website, searching in vain for the ‘How to Get Rid of the Bastards’ section.
“You can’t, apparently.
“Rightly, if disappointingly, poisoning them is verboten.”
The Daily Star recently reported that a heroic dad saved his own daughter’s life when she was “bleeding out” in a horror crash caused by a pigeon swooping on her. Mercedes Valentine was struck by the bird in the face while riding her motorcycle at high speed down a residential street.
She had been out celebrating with her family earlier that day – with her dad, mum and sister, following behind on the road in a car. The 25-year-old model, who has over 250,000 followers on Instagram @mercedesthedancerxo, was flung 260ft in the air and hit the pavement hard – with her injuries so severe, that she was at first, presumed dead.
