BBC Radio 1 legend Andy Peebles dies aged 76 as heartbroken colleagues pay tribute to star

Radio 1 DJ legend Andy Peebles has passed wat at the age of 76, with his colleagues paying tribute to the him online.

Fellow radio host Mike Read shared the heart-wrenching news on X on Sunday morning (March 23) and wrote: “Devastated to hear the news about our chum Andy Peebles. He was about to join us at Heritage. We joined Radio One together. Knew his music & cricket inside out. Raise your bat & enjoy a long rest in the pavilion. We lunched recently with DLT & Adrian Juste. Great innings.”

To which one fan responded: “Gosh Mike I’m saddened by this news as Andy was such a great guy. I remember one Christmas Day in 2011 listening to him play Christmas carols on Smooth FM while I was cooking. I thanked him for it afterwards and Andy being Andy duly responded. A lovely man!!! May he RIP.”

The news comes just a few months after the station announced another huge loss.

Andy was a popular radio presenter and DJ

According to reports, Andy began his radio career in 1973 with BBC Radio Manchester. In 1974, Peebles was among the founding DJs of Piccadilly Radio in Manchester.

After four years at Piccadilly, he went on to present BBC Radio 1 from 1978 to 1992.

During his time with at the Beeb, he also presented 15 editions of the iconic show Top of the Pops between the years of 1979 to 1984.

He also broadcast for the British Forces Broadcasting Service and the BBC World Service.

Beatles legend John Lennon had his final radio interview on 6 December 1980 with Andy on Radio 1, which was two days before the musician was murdered.

Other fans also paid tribute to the star online, with one penning: “Awww, and he was the last person to interview John Lennon wasn’t he? A great broadcaster.”

While another added: “V sad news. An erudite and learned DJ on music programmes and a v accomplished sports reporter as I recall. Simply v good at his job….God rest him.”

Whilst another added: “Sad to hear this. Saw him at the Radio 1 Roadshow years ago and he seemed so genuine.”
