BBC Radio 2 star quits after taking over iconic show following tragic death

One BBC Radio 2 star has decided to step away from their position at the station after taking over one of the broadcaster’s most popular shows following the heartbreaking loss of it’s presenter

A BBC Radio 2 star has decided to quit their role at the station.

Rob Beckett is hanging up his Sunday show mic, but he won’t be straying far from the airwaves. The 39 year old funnyman, who stepped into the role full-time after Paul O’Grady’s heart-wrenching death in 2023, will still pop up as a stand-in presenter.

Post-Paul O’Grady’s passing, Beckett became the full-time face of the Sunday show until today’s bombshell [18 February] dropped that he’s bowing out. Amid a shakeup at the station, which includes Zoe Ball bouncing back into a new weekly programme, it was revealed that Beckett would wrap up his Sunday gig come April.

But fear not, he’s sticking with Radio 2 for the odd cover shift keeping listeners chuckling on air. The Mock The Week star has addressed the decision and released a statement to his fans.

Rob explained: “I’ve had such a laugh each Sunday getting to know the listeners, but as my tour schedule hots up and my family forget what I look like, I’ve decided to step away from a weekly show.”

“But you won’t get away from me that easily as I’ll be back presenting shows on Radio 2 later in the year when normal service is resumed!”

The Head of Radio 2, Helen Thomas, expressed her thanks: “I’d like to thank Rob for his brilliant work every Sunday evening. He’ll stay within the Radio 2 family and will be heard on the station at a later date.”

Elsewhere in Radio 2 news, fan favourite Zoe Ball has decided to return after she recently quit her morning show. In late 2024 it was announced that Ball would be taking a step back, but not three months later and her listeners are buzzing after news that she will be back on the airwaves.

She will host a new Saturday programme from 1-3pm starting in May, which promises good tunes and fun times with the audience. Helen Thomas also addressed her return: “Zoe is one of the UK’s most loved presenters, so I’m thrilled to announce that she has a new home on Radio 2 on Saturday lunchtimes, plus she’ll be hosting various specials for us throughout the year.”
