Best Eurovision Song Contest entry ever as Daily Star debates wacky performances

DAILY STAR SAYS: Over the years, the Eurovision Song Contest has seen some incredible acts, as well as some who we forget about as soon as the voting is announced

We at Daily Star can’t let the Eurovision Song Contest come around without getting involved in the fun. This year, country pop girl group Remember Monday are representing the UK. Judging by the bookies’ odds, they’ve got little chance of winning it, but at least they can actually sing.

It looks like they’ll do better than Olly Alexander in 2024 and Mae Muller in 2023, though, who both got people talking. But it got is thinking about Eurovision of years gone by, and the best ever entry – and we have a lot to say on the matter.

What is your favourite ever Eurovision song? Let us know in the comments…

Jack Wetherill, Showbiz & TV Editor

I’ll get us started with the only correct answer – Spain’s entry from 2022, Chanel with Slo Mo.

I’m not a Eurovision fan generally, but I became (and still am) obsessed with Slo Mo. It’s got a catchy chorus, with some in English while the rest of the song is in Spanish, Chanel sounds and looks great and it’s got a full choreography.

Her outfit on the night was perfection too, and who couldn’t love a song with lyrics including “booty hypnotic”?

I’m not ashamed to admit it was my most played song on Spotify for 2022.

While Chanel brought the sex appeal to Eurovision, Adam’s favourite, Lordi, brought the weird.

He says: “I despise Eurovision but the legend of Lordi will live on forever. All hail the greatest winner ever, 2006’s Finland representative.”

Ed Gleave, Hot TV Columnist

Ed, who is out in Basel for this year’s Eurovision Song Contest, threw it back for us to 1999, with Sweden’s Charlotte Nilsson.

He says: “Charlotte Nilsson’s Take Me To Your Heaven is without doubt the best pop song of all time, and it entered at a time when Eurovision was a much more subdued affair.

“It represents a moment in pop history of such status that will never be repeated.”

Rich Brown, Assistant Editor

Alexander Rybak won Eurovision in 2009(Image: AFP/Getty Images)

Rich admits that Eurovision is hit and miss for him, but the question of the best ever act is an easy one – 2009’s winner, Norway’s Alexander Rybak.

He says: “Fairytale has been stuck in my head for 16 years and randomly appears at a moment’s notice.

“It’s objectively terrible and I don’t think he hits a single note in the entire thing but it’s still a hill I’m willing to die on.

“There’s just not enough violin-based pop music in the world any more and I think that’s a damn shame.”

Ashley Pemberton, News Reporter

It’s all about the big names for Ashley, who went with the 1974 winning song – ABBA’s Waterloo.

He says: “Nothing else has ever, or will ever, come close.”

Daniel Bird, Assistant Celebrity and Entertainment Editor (at The Mirror, but we’ll let him off)

Loreen won Eurovision 2023 with Tattoo(Image: AFP via Getty Images)

A name that will pop up again later, but Dan’s top song is Loreen’s Tattoo, which won in 2023.

He says: “As someone who hates Eurovision, this song (almost) changed my view on the competition.

“It’s not just about the lyrics and the track, from the electro-pop anthem. Loreen’s performance was nothing short of a masterpiece, from the visuals to the staging of the performance.

“One that will go down in Eurovision history for all the right reasons. Loreen should take part every year – there, I said it.”

Dan Saunders, Deputy Picture Editor

Choosing another iconic performer, Dan went with Conchita Wurst’s Rise Like A Phoenix from 2014 “all the way”.

He says: “The song and Conchita brought a dying institution back from the brink of obscurity.”

Andy Gilpin, Deputy Editor In Chief

Andy went for Gina G’s 1996 entry Ooh Ahh, Just a Little Bit.

He says: “Eurovision songs should be catchy, kitsch and not take themselves too seriously. Step forward an, er, Australian (way before those guys were shoe-horned in).

“The 1996 classic Gina G’s Ooh Aah, Just a Little Bit was the soundtrack to many an awkward dance floor in my formative years. I still know all the words and the iconic beat to this day.

“Did I dance like a moron to it? Just a little bit…”

The second time on our list for Loreen, but the first time she won, James went for Euphoria from 2012.

He says: “Loreen’s Euphoria is still a total ear worm. Can’t think of any other tune that comes near.”
