Is it a bird, is it a plane…no it’s Superman flying back into cinemas this Friday!
The new blockbuster stars American David Corenswet, making his debut as the superhero character who tries to reconcile his alien heritage with his adoptive human family.
He co-stars alongside Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Nicholas Hoult as arch villain Lex Luthor… and Krypto the Superdog!
Here James Moore looks back at all those who have donned the iconic costume…
Kirk Alyn
The muscly US actor brought Superman and alter ego, Clark Kent, to life in two movie serials from 1948. He once said: “I picked up that girl and ran up that flight of stairs like it was nothing.” Afterwards roles dried up, though he had a cameo in the 1978 movie Superman. A divorced dad-of-three, he died, aged 88, in 1999.
George Reeves
Having appeared in 1951 movie Superman and the Mole Men and 104 episodes of the TV series Adventures of Superman, tragedy struck a year after Reeves’ role ended.
In 1959 the 45-year-old died from a mysterious gunshot to the head at home, while fiancée Leonore Lemmon and others were there. Although ruled a suicide, some believe he was killed in a mafia hit.
Christopher Reeve
The star got his breakthrough movie role in 1978’s big-budget flick Superman and went on to star in three sequels. In 1995, he was thrown from a horse and left paralyzed from the neck down. Reeve used a wheelchair and a ventilator for the rest of his life, dying aged 52 in 2004. Wife Dana, 44, died from lung cancer a year later.
Dean Cain
He played the caped crusader in the 1990s TV series Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman, alongside Teri Hatcher. Cain later had roles in TV shows Smallville and Supergirl. The 58-year-old once dated actress Brooke Shields and has a son with ex-Playboy model Samantha Torres.
Tom Welling
Playing a young Clark Kent in the Noughties TV series Smallville, Welling has gone on to appear in movies like horror remake The Fog.
Divorced from a model, the 48-year-old dad of two is now wed to businesswoman Jessica Lee Rose.
Brandon Routh
Bringing the superhero back to the big screen in 2006’s Superman Returns, the ex-barman, was already a fan – he wore Superman pyjamas as a kid. He has since concentrated on TV roles and the 45-year-old dad-of-one recently split from actress wife Courtney Ford.
Henry Cavill
The first Brit to play Superman, he made a hit in 2013 movie Man of Steel, 2016’s Batman v Superman and 2017’s Justice League.
The Warhammer gaming fan has since starred in a string of TV shows and movies like The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare and has a baby with girlfriend Natalie Viscuso.
Tyler Hoechlin
The 37-year-old American has played Superman in the US TV shows Supergirl and Superman and Lois. The ex-baseball wannabe says the character stands for “hope.”
David Corenswet
A star of TV’s House of Cards and 2022 movie Pearl, the 31-year-old is the latest chisel-jawed hunk to take on the mantle. A married dad-of-one, he once called playing Superman his “pie-in the-sky” ambition.
