Britain’s Got Talent legend recalls mortifying onstage blunder which left them red-faced

EXCLUSIVE: Britain’s Got Talent star Paul Potts has recalled an embarrassing moment he was left stunned in front of the ITV judges when he first auditioned for the show

A Britain’s Got Talent legend has opened up about a moment they’d rather forget.

ITV champ Paul Potts, 54, spoke exclusively to Daily Star in collaboration with https://www.skyvegas.com/games/slots, as he recalled his time on the talent show.

Opera singer Paul first auditioned for the first-ever series of the show back in 2007, and says he was incredibly nervous before singing in front of the three judges at the time, Simon Cowell, Amanda Holden and Piers Morgan.

But things went a little pear shaped when he forgot to turn his phone on silent, and he was surprised with a call on stage, which let out his novelty ringtone.

Paul cringed: “The funniest thing that ever happened to me was during the semi-final and we were told not to take our phones with us. My natural reaction just to check my phone in my pocket.

“I’ve told this story before, but as Piers Morgan stopped speaking and Simon Cowell was about to speak, I felt my phone vibrate in my pocket, and I always had it set to vibrate four times and then ring really, loud. I had a novelty ringtone at the time.”

When asked what tips he has for the new contestants this year, he also shared his hot take on how they should try handle things.

Paul advised: “This is the one tip that I use pretty much every time, and that is, go out and enjoy yourself. If you’re enjoying yourself, it’s infectious and people enjoy you.

“Try and ignore the judges and the audience to an extent as well. Just enjoy yourself and make the most of the opportunity.

“The only regret you’ll ever have is if you didn’t give it your all. There’s no point of having regrets, so just go out and put it all out there.”

He added: “You can have too much knowledge of what’s happening and it’s easy to overthink it. If I had known exactly how it would work, I think I would have found that more difficult.

“The fact that I didn’t know, and this is a part of the advantage of being in the first season, is that I didn’t know what would happen next, so I couldn’t overthink. There was less opportunity to overthink things, so therefore I went into things fresh without trying to think too much.

“Sometimes you get in your own way when you try and overthink and over-prepare. There’s the old saying, a little knowledge is a dangerous thing. It’s better that you go into it completely fresh and not and not think what’s going to happen – that’s the best approach.”
