Baywatch icon Carmen Electra has previously revealed that she was living “homeless on the streets of LA” before she met Prince, who helped her find fame back in the 90s
Carmen Electra was homeless before singer Prince came into her life.
The actress rose to stardom back in the 90s and has previously revealed that she was “homeless” for a while. Back in September 2024, Carmen spoke at 90s Con Florida and opened up about her rough start in life. She said: “I was homeless in LA, I’m not from a rich family or anything like that.
“I knew where I needed to be, in New York or LA, so there was a lot of struggling and I didn’t really know what I was going to do, but I just started to try things and come out of my shell really. So that’s the beginning.”
Despite the fact that the future Baywatch star was a trained dancer, she struggled to find work in the industry, which left her feeling lost.
“I would not want to go into auditions, I’d leave and say everyone’s so pretty, I can’t do this, I can’t memorise anything. I felt like trying things and meeting some good people on the way that helped me,” she explained.
The starlet said that she used to keep a “shank in my jean shorts” and “walked to a payphone” with a pager. Carmen, previously known as Tara Leigh Patrick before she changed her name for good, credits her fame to the legendary singer Prince.
She says the music legend “discovered” her and was responsible for her iconic stage name, later helping to produce her studio album.
Her self titled album was released in February 1993 and is her first and only studio project. Prince was heavily involved, with the songs largely written by him and other members of the New Power Generation band.
Tracks include Go Go Dancer, Fantasia Erotica, Everybody Get On Up and Fun.
“He just set me up and he was so supportive. With his support I got a tad bit more confident and just tried things and tried to keep that in mind with all my insecurities that I still have.”
Film fans will know Carmen from her roles in Scary Movie and Starsky & Hutch, but she quickly became a huge Hollywood face after landing a spot on Baywatch.
The blonde bombshell played the swimsuit-clad Lani McKenzie on the 90s sitcom.
