Cinema legend described as ‘hero on screen’ dead at 69 as tributes pour in

Sreenivasan, the beloved actor and filmmaker, has died aged 69, with tributes pouring in from famous friends for the star whose career spanned more than 50 years

Tributes are pouring in following the death of celebrated actor and filmmaker Sreenivasan, who passed away in hospital earlier today (Saturday, December 20).

The star’s illustrious career stretched over five decades, and he sadly died at a hospital in Kerala, India, at the age of 69. His cause of death remains unconfirmed, though local media outlets have widely reported he had been battling health problems for some time. The actor is survived by his cherished wife Vimala Sreenivasan, along with their sons Vineeth Sreenivasan and Dhyan Sreenivasan.

The family is yet to issue a statement regarding Sreenivasan’s passing, reports the Express.

Following the devastating news, fellow actors and filmmakers have been sharing heartfelt tributes across social media platforms.

Director and MP Kamal Haasan posted on X: “Some artists entertain, some enlighten, some provoke. #Sreenivasan did it all, with a smile that carried truth and a laugh that carried responsibility. My respects to a remarkable mind. Deepest condolences to his family and admirers.”

Indian National Congress member Shashi Tharoor penned: “Malayalam cinema won’t be the same without the genius of #Sreenivasan. From the satirical bites of “Sandesham”to the raw emotion of “Vadakkunokkiyantram”, he taught us to laugh at ourselves while thinking deeper.

“A true master of the craft who redefined what it means to be a “hero” on screen, & who was an effective director as well. Beyond the actor was a brilliant writer who captured the pulse of Kerala like no other. Sreenivasan’s scripts are time capsules of social commentary, humour, and unparalleled wit. There will never be another observer of life quite like him.”

Actress Urvashi described the legend’s passing as “unexpected”, though she didn’t reveal any additional information.

One devoted admirer penned: “There was something so deeply humane about him. Sreenivasan, whatever he touched with his many talents, wasn’t just a true reflection of the Malayali soul; he shaped what it meant to be Malayali. Gone too soon. This one cuts deep.”

Sreenivasan has left a lasting legacy on Malayalam cinema, featuring in numerous productions from Sanghaganam to Sanmanassullavarkku Samadhanam.
