Bet you don’t know Danny Dyer’s real name – the EastEnders icon recently revealed the meaning behind the unusual moniker and his father’s antics on the day he was registered
Danny Dyer’s real name is not what you think it is.
You’d be forgiven for assuming the Human Traffic actor’s name is actually Daniel, but you’d be sorely mistaken – he has a far more interesting origin story. In an interview with British GQ, Danny Dyer dissected his own Wikipedia page and set the record straight.
He told the camera: “I’d like to address the first bit [his ‘real name’]. My real name is Danial and that’s because me dad was so p***** when he turned up when I was born.”
“He weren’t there, he was in the boozer. He couldn’t spell Daniel so he spelled it D-A-N-I-A-L.”
British GQ posted the video on their Instagram page and fans rushed to the comments to laugh at Danny’s unfortunate story. Someone joked: “Could have been Denial, that would have been worse!”
Another person said that his real name “sounds like ‘denial'” as other people left laughing emojis. One fan quipped: “Lucky…he could have called you Carl Sberg Dyer if he was back from the pub [laughing face].”
The EastEnders icon first rose to fame back in 1999 thanks to his breakout role in Human Traffic. Film fans will also know him as Billy the Limpet in Mean Machine and Tommy Johnson in The Football Factory, one of his most iconic roles.
Soap fans will also recognise the Londoner from beloved BBC soap EastEnders. He joined the cast as Mick Carter back in 2013 and remained in the series until he left in 2022.
In his autobiography, Danny cheekily wrote that he was not ready to join EE until he was “fat, bald and fifty”. His role as Mick earned him Serial Drama Performance award at the National Television Awards in ’15, ’16 and ’19.
