Sir David Jason’s iconic portrayal of Derek ‘Del Boy’ Trotter in the beloved BBC sitcom, Only Fools and Horses, has stuck with him since he first embodied the memorable TV character in 1981. The actor’s catchphrase throughout the show’s seven-series run, “This time next year, we’ll be millionaires” became a signature of his character’s ambitious yet often fruitless endeavours.

Despite also leading the cast in A Touch of Frost, Open All Hours, and The Darling Buds of May, Sir David Jason fans often ask him to resurrect the much-adored market trader when they encounter him. Although the 85-year old star usually turns down these requests, one fan shared a tale of when he gave in and delivered a performance to remember.

Recounting their story on Reddit, they revealed: “My mate’s dad was good friends with David and used to run a B&B in Weston-super-Mare. Over the years, ‘Uncle David’ would pop by now and then, and my mate would also see him at family gatherings and events.”

They recalled: “As you can imagine, whenever he showed up, people couldn’t resist asking him to ‘do a bit of Del Boy.’ He always politely declined, until one unforgettable occasion.

“After a bit of friendly badgering, David finally gave in. My mate said he took a deep breath, and in that moment, everything about him changed-his posture, his expression, even the way he stood. It was like Del Boy had walked into the room.

“For the next 20 minutes, Del Boy was the life of the party, giving everyone a performance they’d never forget.”

The heartwarming moment shows just what Sir David Jason can be like when the cameras aren’t rolling. Judging by this fan’s experience, he is a really good laugh in person.

And that’s not all – as turning the ‘Del Boy’ persona on in public shows what a remarkable actor he really is.

This cherished recollection comes after fellow Only Fools enthusiasts were gobsmacked to discover that meeting Sir David at a fan convention could cost them a whopping £550, with the stipulation that selfies and autographs are strictly prohibited.

In October, Sir David is scheduled to make an appearance at the Only Fools and Horses Appreciation Society Convention in Milton Keynes and it has been revealed that tickets for a professional photo opportunity with Sir David in the Trotter Flat start at a hefty £350.

Those willing to splash out on Platinum tickets, meanwhile, will have to cough up £550, which as well as the photograph, also includes a signed mount and dinner.

The event’s website clarifies: “Due to time constraints, Sir David will not be signing any items across the convention weekend. We kindly ask you do not bring anything to attempt Sir David to sign as it will not be permitted. We will have staff on call to ensure this in fairness to everyone.”

Moreover, the site clearly states: “There will be NO ‘Selfies’ with Sir David Jason. Selfies are left to the discretion of the other guest actors, although most are very happy to pose for a photograph if asked politely.”
