The 2025 SAG Awards saw Selena Gomez and Zoe Saldana take to the stage to honour Emilia Pérez’s controversial film, but viewers at home couldn’t help but notice some awkward moments

The 2025 SAG Awards saw viewers tearing into Emilia Pérez as Selena Gomez and Zoe Saldana stumbled through a tribute to the contentious movie.

The co-star duo hit the stage to present the movie, stained by lead Karla Sofía Gascón’s controversial social media antics, but fans at home clocked some cringe moments.

There was no appluase for the film and fans noticed Gomez and Saldana looked mortified even chatting about it.

On social media one person posted: “the lack of applause for zoe and selena lol,” while another person chimed in with: “Seeing the Emilia Perez presentation just feels wrong.”

Another user quipped: “‘Emilia Perez is a ride like no other.’ Well, yes,” and another observer noted: “Emilia Perez featuring only the two supporting actors at SAG Awards but not its main because we all know what happened during this award season.”

One viewer commented: “They sounded like they were embarrassed to talk about their own movie string that presentation.”

And yet another critic was dying for the award season to wrap up, blasting: “I love awards season but honestly cannot wait for the endless pain and suffering from Emilia Pérez being forced on us to finally end”, reports the Express US.

This cringe situation followed hot on the heels after Gascón herself had tried to clean up her act with a deep Instagram post on February 1, begging pardon and hitting back at critics trying to “stain my existence with lies.”

“THEY ALREADY WON. The first thing I’d like to do is ask for the most sincere forgiveness from those who feel bad about the way I’ve expressed myself at any stage of my life,” she apologised in a statement in Spanish, translated by Variety.

She continued: “I have many things to learn in this world, the forms [in which I learn] are my biggest defect. Life has taught me something I never wanted to learn: it’s clear to me that no matter how much my message is my message, without using the proper words, [the message] can convert into another.”

Alongside her statement, she posted an image symbolising her commitment to Nichiren Buddhism and added, “As with Emilia Pérez: We can all do better. Me too.”

Her journey led her to fame within six months and instilled a sense of duty saying, “I have gone from living a normal life to a life at the top of my profession in just six months, now my responsibility is very great because my voice not only belongs to me but to many people who feel represented and hopeful by or with me.”

Gascón reflected on the positive influence of her faith, crediting Nichiren Buddhism for bettering both her and those around her.

She confessed that she’s “not the same person” she was ten years ago due to her spiritual transformation, adding: “Although I have not committed any crimes I was not perfect either, I am not even perfect now. I just try to learn and be a better person every day.”
