The Oscars are set to honour the legendary Gene Hackman today (Sunday), with a special tribute speech by his old pal Morgan Freeman, as reported by TMZ. The late star’s family was clued in about Freeman’s part in an extended “In Memoriam” segment, celebrating their shared history on the silver screen, including their roles in Clint Eastwood’s iconic flick Unforgiven, which snagged Hackman his second Oscar.

Although Freeman didn’t win Oscar for it, he did bag one in 2005 for Million Dollar Baby. After their Unforgiven success, the pair joined forces once more in 2000’s Under Suspicion, one of Hackman’s last gigs before retiring in 2004.

Despite the Oscar nod, TMZ has learned that the Hackman clan won’t be at the 2025 ceremony following the sad loss of Gene and his wife Betsy. In a heartbreaking update earlier this week, the couple was found dead at home on Wednesday, along with one of their beloved dogs.

The investigation into their sudden passing is ongoing.

On Friday, fresh details emerged about Hackman’s pacemaker, hinting that its last data from February 17 could spell out the day he died. Toxicology tests are still in the pipeline, but carbon monoxide has already been ruled out for Gene and Betsy by the medical examiner, as per the Irish Star’s accounts, reports the Mirror US.

The tragedy of Betsy, Gene, and their pet dog remains shrouded in mystery. Just this morning, readers of the Irish Star were gobsmacked by the revelation that the couple’s pooch was found mummified in the bathroom closet, a stone’s throw away from her master’s cadaver, wrapped in a riddle.

As people reeled from the revelations at the death press conference, Santa Fe Fire Chief Brian Moya clamped up on the hound’s cryptic demise. The entire case is cloaked in ambiguity.

Yet, coppers have established that both mutts seemed in good nick, despite Gene being deceased for what seems like nine days – deduced from his pacemaker log. Fire Chief Moya disclosed that the back door of the house was open, hinting that the tail-waggers had some degree of freedom.

“I think they were able to go outside a little bit. I don’t know about food,” he commented, casting a sliver of light on the situation while leaving heaps of questions in the dark.
