Late Hollywood star Gene Hackman’s home in New Mexico – which he once said had a sort of ‘magic’ to it – has been revealed in an aerial photograph after his death
Gene Hackman’s home has been unveiled in a new shot following the actor’s mysterious death.
Speculation has been rife after the Hollywood star, 95, and his wife Betsy Arakawa, 65, were found dead at their home in the US state of New Mexico in February. The couple were discovered deceased on February 26 along with one of their dogs, while two other dogs were found alive.
With a number of unanswered questions in the case and the investigation ongoing, there has been much interest in the screen star and his life in Santa Fe. An aerial photo from the Mirror shows the actor’s sprawling pad. Surrounded by trees, it appears to have a sweeping driveway and a sun-soaked outdoor area.
The house – which is set on 12 acres of hilltop land – was previously featured in Architectural Digest and features high ceilings, wooden beams and an open feel.
Hackman said of the work done on the property: “I wanted a big room with a great hall feeling, with other rooms opening off it, not closed off with a lot of walls.”
“It had a kind of magic in it,” he said of the house. ” It’s totally different from my other houses.”
Hackman and Arakawa’s bodies were discovered in separate rooms, with pianist Arakawa’s remains in a bathroom and Hackman’s in a room off the kitchen. The body of the dog was discovered in a closet.
There was no sign of forced entry at the property and no obvious signs of trauma to the bodies. Some people had wondered whether the pair may have died of carbon monoxide poisoning, but both Hackman and Arakawa later tested negative. It is thought the couple died days before they were found as Hackman’s pacemaker last recorded anything on February 17.
A statement from the Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Office said: “In the early hours of Thursday, February 27, 2025, Hackman and Arakawa were transported to the Office of the Medical Investigator. An autopsy was performed. Initial findings noted no external trauma to either individual.
“Carbon monoxide and toxicology tests were requested for both individuals,” it continued. “The manner and cause of death has not been determined. The official results of the autopsy and toxicology reports are pending. This remains an open investigation.”
