Beloved actress and national treasure Gillian Anderson is said to be returning to the cult sci-fi drama The X Files, according to the reboot’s esteemed director
Gillian Anderson may be returning to star in the role that helped launch her career, as The X Files’ investigator Dana Scully.
The actress has held talks with Hollywood director Ryan Coogler, who has written a revival series of the 1990s hit drama. Coogler has dubbed the remake “f****** scary”, likely to be terrifying for fans.
The new series is rumoured to be returning via Disney Plus. Coogler has confirmed that he’s “spoken to the great Gillian Anderson” about the series, which is his next project. The Black Panther director said: “She’s incredible. Fingers crossed there.
“I’ve been excited about that for a long time, and I’m fired up to get back to it. Some of those episodes, if we do our jobs right, will be really f****** scary.
“We’re gonna try to make something really great, bro, and really be something for the real X Files fans, and maybe find some new ones.”
Anderson has enjoyed a terrific screen run in the last six years thanks to Netflix series Sex Education and The Crown.
The latter has seen the star awarded with a Golden Globe, a Primetime Emmy, and a SAG award, amongst others.
The 56-year-old actress had spoken about she was excited about the prospect of a comeback in the role, which made her a global star. She said she “cannot think of a better way around for a reboot to happen,” calling the filmmaker “a bit of a genius.”
She added: “Whether I am involved in it is a whole other thing. I’m not saying no.
“I think he’s really cool and I think if he did it, it would probably be done incredibly well. And maybe I’ll pop in for a little something something.”
The X Files ran for nine seasons from 1993 to 2002 and had a two-season revival from 2016 to 2018. Its date of return is yet to be announced.
