Good Morning Britain host in ‘immense pain’ as they admit ‘I can barely move’

Viewers tuned into Monday’s episode (April 28) to find Ed Balls back in the studio, but the former politician revealed he was left in searing pain during his time away

A Good Morning Britain star has admitted they’re in “immense pain”.

The show has, in recent weeks, had a number major events take place live on air, such as Susanna Reid’s interruption of the programme to announce the death of the last surviving pilot in the Battle of Britain. The hosts have also suffered some scrapes – Ed Balls had to cut a debate on the Royal Family short, and Richard Madeley was shut down by a pair of Australian twins.

Former MP Ed, 58, had been missing from the ITV show and soaking up the sun (a little too much). However, as viewers tuned in on Monday (April 28), they were treated to Ed’s return.

Ed wasted no time in getting stuck into the news headlines, but before he covered the main stories that were making waves, he addressed his disappearance from the programme. His co-star Susanna Reid said: “Somebody got some warm weather over the weekend!”

Blushing, Ed responded: “They did! It looks like I’ve been on some exotic beach.”

He continued: “But actually, to be honest, it was the Isle of Wight, Portsmouth and Poole. I was on a sailing boat last week, and it was very sunny, it turned out; I think all the rays were reflecting off of the water.”

Ed showed off his tan and admitted he was slapping on the sunscreen to avoid being burned. He then explained what else he had been getting up to, which then caused him to be a lot of pain.

“I also played football on Saturday and I’m in immense pain,” he fumed. “I can hardly move having played this football match; so, sunkissed but a bit stiff.”

This, however, would not be the only time that Ed would be left red-faced over the course of Monday’s show, as later on in the programme, Susanna brought up Ed’s awkward political gaffe, now lovingly nicknamed Ed Balls Day.

During the hilarious incident, Ed had tried to search for his own name on X, formerly known as Twitter, but accidentally tweeted his own name. The event, which took place on April 28, 2011, is now known as “Ed Balls Day” – a fact that Susanna refused to let slide.

“Before we crack on, let me just say, Happy Ed Balls Day!” Susanna beamed, as Ed cracked up, bursting into laughter. “Oh my gosh, well, and happy Good Morning Britain day.”

To add to the celebrations, Good Morning Britain celebrated its eleventh birthday during Monday’s edition of the programme, which led Ed to beam that his namesake day was actually longer than that of the programme’s existence.

Fans were quick to share in the love for Ed’s rather hilarious mishap, taking to social media to celebrate the day. “Happy Ed Balls day to all those who celebrate!” one wrote fan wrote, “seems to come round quicker every year!”

A second user added: “Happy Ed Balls Day! Celebrate modestly.” Whilst a third also penned: “Happy 15th Ed Balls Day to all who celebrate.”

Good Morning Britain airs every weekday at 6am on ITV1 and ITVX.
