But now, the latest slew of announcements have left fans of the novel series buzzing with excitement – particularly after a loveable star was chosen to join the cast. Several Potterheads have welcomed the new choices, with many hoping it will echo the legendary film series that was spawned from the book.

Hollywood legend John Lithgow – famous for his stints in Killers of the Flower Moon and Conclave – will take on the role of Dumbledore. On top of this, the role of Hagrid has also been confirmed, with Nick Frost – best known for appearing in the likes of Shaun of the Dead, Paul and Hot Fuzz – donning Hagrid’s huge beard.

Other roles that have already been doled out include Professor McGonagall – once played by late Dame Maggie Smith – who will now be given to stage star Janet McTeer. As well as this, Severus Snape – the cold, suspicious teacher of Harry – will be given to rising star Paapa Essiedu.

Several fans of the series have praised the moves by HBO, and many took to social media to make their thoughts heard. Many focused on John’s landing of Dumbledore, while others praised the overall decisions of HBO bosses to recreate the iconic line-up.

“This Harry Potter cast is John Lithgow as Dumbledore & Nick Frost as Hagrid — spot on!” one user beamed. “Paapa Essiedu as Snape is bold choice; curious to see his spin.”

A second user slammed the haters for the show: “So much negativity! If you want the original films, go watch them; if you want the books, go read them. I look forward to seeing a new incarnation, and new actors breathe life into the series.”

Meanwhile a third added: “Say what you will about the whole HBO series, but I honestly think this is a perfect casting.” Whilst a fourth viewer penned: “I’m eager to watch it – I’m sure all the actors will do an amazing job.”

The castings have yet to include the iconic trio of Harry, Ron and Hermione – though these are set to come in due course. It comes amid HBO’s blockbuster reboot of the show for the silver screen, which has promised to stick to the storylines explored in the original book series.
