Zoe Saldana made the world cringe after she entered an F-bomb rant during her BAFTA award speech – but she’s not the only celeb to have slipped up while on-stage
Viewers couldn’t believe their ears after Zoe Saldana collected her BAFTA for Best Supporting Actress with a swear-word ridden acceptance speech.
The Hollywood legend,46, won the coveted gong at the glitzy bash on Sunday evening (16 February) for her role in musical film Emilia Perez.
Leading up to the ceremony the film came with controversies surrounding casting and resurfaced alleged “racist” tweets from co-star Karla Sofia Gascon, Zoe Saldana continued the film’s bad rap with her expletive speech – before being brutally cut-off.
But, this isn’t the first time where celebs have been embroiled in naughty award-acceptance speeches – from movie to music stars, no one is exempt from a severe slip of the tongue.
Here, we take a look some of the most notorious speeches in modern times…
Adele’s middle finger
British songbird Adele has become a national treasure and a global phenomenon thanks to her impressive pipes – and laugh-out-loud personality.
But, not even the music industry’s finest is immune to being savagely cut-off mid-emotional speech. We take you back to the simpler times of 2012 where Britain was bonded over the London Olympics, Jubilee and Adele’s record-smashing album ’21’.
Adele managed to scoop up two Brits for her second studio album that gave the world hits ‘Rolling In The Deep’, ‘Someone Like You’ and ‘Set Fire To The Rain’.
And she certainly brought the heat during her speech for ‘Best British Album’ of the year. At just 23-years-old, Adele graced the stage to share her thoughts about bagging the biggest gong of the night.
She said: “Nothing makes me prouder than coming home with six Grammys, then coming to the BRITS and winning album of the year.
“I am so so proud to be British and to be flying the flag and to be in the same room with all of you.”
However, not before long, host James Corden infamously stepped in and had to cut Adele off mid-speech in order to air the last performance of the night.
Adele continued: “Can I just say goodbye and I’ll see you next time round, yeah?” Savagely, she then proceeded to flip her middle finger, as Corden squirmed next to her before welcoming Blur to the stage.
Many thought that Adele’s rude gesture was aimed at host Corden, who had to do the dishonour of cutting her off.
However, Adele later clarified that, “I flung the middle finger. That was for the suits at the Brit Awards, not my fans. I’m sorry if I offended anyone but the suits offended me.”
The incredibly successful singer would later receive an apology from the BRITs for cutting short her “big moment.”
At the time, ITV later issued a statement: “The Brits is a live event. Unfortunately the programme was over-running and we had to move on.
“We would like to apologise to Adele for the interruption.”
A BRITs spokesman added: “We regret this happened and we send our deepest apologies to Adele that her big moment was cut short.
“We don’t want this to undermine her incredible achievement in winning our night’s biggest award. It tops off what’s been an incredible year for her.”
Alex Turner’s on-stage tantrum
Alex Turner, of Arctic Monkeys, said “hold my mic” and then dropped it…
Fast-forward two years later to 2014 and Arctic Monkeys frontman Alex 39, wanted his turn at nailing a notorious awards speech.
After being invited on the stage for the indie-rock band’s ‘Best British Album’ win with ‘AM’, Sheffield-born Alex didn’t waste anytime to say his piece.
With his band mates behind him, the lead vocalist spiralled into a now infamous on-stage tantrum about ‘rock’n’roll’ – and how it will never ‘die’.
His monologue is thought to be a nod to how the genre of music is often dismissed from the mainstream, some accuse Alex of being on drugs during the speech.
In the notorious 2014 BRITs speech, he said: “That rock’n’roll, eh? That rock’n’roll, it just won’t go away. It might hibernate from time to time and sink back into the swamp.
“I think the cyclical nature of the universe in which it exists demands it adheres to some of its rules.
“But it’s always waiting there, just around the corner, ready to make its way back through the sludge and smash through the glass ceiling, looking better than ever.
“Yeah, that rock’n’roll, it seems like it’s fading away sometimes, but it will never die. And there’s nothing you can do about it. Thank you very much for this. I do truly appreciate it. Don’t take that the wrong way… “
The ‘I Wanna Be Yours’ singer then proceeded to, very sassily, drop the mic after giving the impassioned speech about the music industry.
He cheekily said: “And er, yeah… Invoice me for the microphone if you need to…”
Years later, Alex has clarified some of the motivation behind his speech.
He shared that he didn’t want to ‘pretend’ about getting a BRIT award was something he had ‘dreams’ about from his childhood.
“A lot of people thought I was waffling away on drugs,” the hitmaker shared.
“But I wasn’t.
“I just can’t pretend getting an award was something I’ve dreamed about since I was a kid, because it isn’t.”
Either way, that sassy speech and mic drop is one we’re remembering over 10 years on…
Zoe Saldana’s F-word rant
And, more recently, to add into the swear-ridden acceptance speech history book is actress Zoe Saldana for BAFTAs Best Supporting Actress.
The Emilia Perez actress took the stage for an emotional speech where she thanked her loved ones and co-stars for their support.
But, it looks like emotion overcame Zoe a bit too much after expletives managed to leap into the monologue – including a back-to-back trio of F-words.
Before she could continue, and the BBC could risk anymore naughty swear words into the coverage, Zoe was abruptly cut-off, with the edit jumping to the actress walking off stage.
Her speech in full: “I was told not to cry by my children, so I’ll try.
“This is so validating and a true honour, because the very few times that I went for a part with a British accent or dialect coach, I was like, ‘This is not going to happen to you.’
“Even though I have a lot of British friends, I find myself repeating all their phrases, and I know that I’m a pain in the a***.
“BAFTA thank you, this was a creative challenge of a lifetime. How do you begin to even approach a film that not just defies categorisation, and you start by taking the leap with Jacques Audiard.
“I want to thank my wonderful cast… Films are supposed to change hearts and challenge minds and I hope I did something like this. voices need to be heard, just not my English accent.
“I’m dedicating all of these awards and the film Emilia Pérez to my nephew, Eli. He is the reason – they are the reason – I signed up to do this film in the first place. So as the proud aunt of a trans life, I will always stand with my community of trans people.
“Oh my god I’m getting a countdown. F*** f*** f***! “
