K-Pop star Wheesung has been found dead in his home at the age of 43, with police launching an investigation into the cause.
Formerly known as Choi Whee-sung, the star was found dead at his home in Seoul on Monday (March 10), leaving fans devastated over another death in the K-pop world.
The singer was reportedly found in a state of cardiac arrest, with authorities saying that a “significant amount of time” had passed before his body was discovered. Reports suggest that an autopsy will be carried out.
The star’s agency, Tajoy Entertainment, has been quoted as saying in a statement: “The artist Wheesung has left us. He was found in cardiac arrest at his residence and was later pronounced dead.”
The company said that staff and other artists were “in deep sorrow” over the With Me singer’s death.
Wheesung had a huge fan base and his followers have also been heartbroken to hear the news, with many posting moving tributes to the late star on social media.
“One posted on X: “I’m so devastated about Wheesung. I used to think it was silly that people cried about celebs, but here I am crying. This is so — I’m sooo… idk.”
“What shocking news!” said someone else. “I really like all his songs! RIP Wheesung!”
Another fan said they were “really heartbroken” to hear about the star’s death.
“Wheesung was one of the most talented artists in the Korean music industry,” commented another K-pop fan. “He has influenced so many singers in his career that he deserves to be praised for it. To me he was the best singer of his time.”
“I am literally at work crying in the bathroom,” another fan wrote on the platform. “He was one of my all time favourites.”
“I’m absolutely shocked right now,” one fan said. “I grew up listening to some of Wheesung’s music – I’m Missing You and They Are Coming are my go to songs by him. This is sad. May Wheesung’s memory be a blessing.”
Wheesung started his career in boy groups in the late 90s but he went on to sign a solo deal. His first solo album, entitled Like A Movie, was unveiled in 2002. Follow up albums included It’s Real, For The Moment and Eternal Essence of Music.
In 2021 he was convicted and handed a suspended jail sentence for use of surgical anaesthetic propofol.
