Malcolm in the Middle return confirmed – but with one major character change

Nearly two decades on from the last series of Malcolm in the Middle, the iconic sitcom is officially making a comeback, but not everyone from the original cast will be returning

Disney has confirmed iconic 90s sitcom Malcolm in the Middle is making a huge comeback.

The classic American sitcom is heading back to our screens after intense speculation, including some hints from lead star Frankie Muniz the reboot was on the cards. It comes as Disney’s streaming platform Disney+ continues to churn out “must see” dramas and shows as it dominates the industry.

Disney+ has now officially given the go-ahead to the sitcom’s revival, with four episodes set to be produced. However, it has since been revealed that not all of the original cast will be starring in the new version of the show.

Frankie, who plays the title character Malcolm, will be making a dramatic return, together with Hollywood faves Bryan Cranston and Jane Kaczmarek also coming back. But one other family member is opting to stay out of the limelight and is set to be dramatically replaced.

According to Variety, actors Justin Berfield and Christopher Masterson are to reprise their roles as Reese and Francis respectively. But iconic character Dewey is set for a major shift, as original actor Erik Per Sullivan was confirmed not to be coming back to the show.

The news of Erik not returning to the show is not too surprising, as the child star retired from the acting business after Malcolm in the Middle ended back in 2006. Since then, he has sparingly been seen in the public eye, with his last credited appearance in a film coming in 2010’s hit “Twelve”.

Instead, new actor Caleb Ellsworth-Clark will take the baton and portray Dewey in the Disney+ reboot, which has not had an air date confirmed. Caleb is already well known to audiences, after he landed roles in the likes of black comedy Fargo and The Expanse.

A host of other new characters will be added to the show, with Malcolm now being joined by his younger brother Jamie and youngest sibling Kelly. On top of this, Keeley Karsten is set to join the show to play Leah, Malcolm’s daughter.

Jamie had initially been introduced in the original run of the show, but Kelly is a new character fleshed out after parents Hal and Lois were told they were expecting their sixth child. In contrast to the dim-witted Hal and overzealous Lois, Kelly has been described as “self-sufficient, gets good grades and already wiser than most of the family”.

The show is set to start filming in just a few week’s time in the Canadian city of Vancouver. Teasing the new series of the iconic show, the official description of the first episode reads: “Malcolm and his daughter are drawn into the family’s chaos when Hal and Lois demand his presence for their 40th wedding anniversary party.”

The original series of Malcolm in the Middle is available to stream on Disney+.
