Photos of them have circulated on social media and have fuelled speculation that a seventh series of the hit BBC police drama could be in the works.

Compston, 40, who plays Detective Inspector Steve Arnott in the series, now says he is expecting to be seeing “a bit more” of the Line of Duty team in the near future.

Speaking on his Restless Natives podcast, he said: “I’m literally going for dinner again with them tonight.

“I will leave here and go and meet Vicky, Adrian and Jed and we will just talk about life.

“You know we are just close pals. It’s been really nice to see quite a bit of them recently and I’ll maybe be seeing a bit more.”

Compston refused to give any further details and added: “I’m not getting caught out on my own podcast.

“My standard thing to say is ‘I love people want to see us, it’s great they keep asking us to come back and you’ll hear it from us first’.”

The sixth series of Line Of Duty was broadcast in 2021 and scored record breaking viewing figures with 16 million people tuning into the final episode.

The finale saw the mysterious ‘H’ figure finally revealed but the ending divided opinion among some viewers.

In an interview with Compston on the BBC last year, Mercurio, 59, said it would be “great” to work again with the cast if he could find the right storyline.

He said: “We love working together and the fact is we really appreciate how many people care about the show and want to see it come back.

“So if we can find a way that we can come back I think it would be great.

“We have to find a story that makes sense, that is territory that we haven’t covered before and takes not just a new character into those areas but takes you and Vicky and Adrian into territory we haven’t covered before.

“If we can find all those pieces of the recipe then it would be great to talk to the BBC and see if they will let us do some more.”
