Fans have compared what is happening with the power cuts in Spain and Portugal to Julia Roberts’ 2023 apocalyptic psychological thriller, Leave The World Behind
Julia Roberts’ Leave The World Behind is eerily similar to the current power cut situation in Spain and Portugal, film fans have said.
A state of emergency was declared this week after widespread power blackouts across the two countries, with the outage plunging thousands of people across the Iberian Peninsula into darkness. While power has started to be restored, several people have pointed out that the crisis was similar to what happened in the apocalyptic psychological thriller.
The 2023 Netflix movie sees Hollywood beauty Julia and actor Ethan Hawke as a couple on holiday with their children when a huge cyber attack brings the world to a standstill. With the power off and communication crippled, life descends into chaos.
As news of the blackout in Europe emerged, many movie fans took to social media to remark on the similarities. “Leave the World Behind was real,” one posted on X.
Someone else said it was “Leave The World Behind irl version”. “Spain goin thru some Leave The World Behind,” posted somebody else.
“Has Leave The World Behind been tested on Spain + Portugal?” one person asked, as somebody else exclaimed: “IS THIS LEAVE THE WORLD BEHIND? WHAT’S GOING ON?”
Another viewer chimed in: “No electricity in Spain and Portugal gives strong Leave The World Behind vibes.” “Leave The World Behind movie on Netflix is a great but eerie-similar storyline,” said someone else.
Another X user remarked: “The situation in Spain, Portugal and parts of France is interesting to say the least. Leave The World Behind movie comes into mind.”
One fan quipped that it looked like the movie “was a documentary”. “Leave The World Behind movie coming true,” said another.
Sharing an update from Spain, somebody else posted on the platform: “In Malaga, Spain right now and I can hear police sirens everywhere. Electricity completely cut off and my 5G is barely working. What are the odds of me watching the movie Leave The World Behind last week and this happening.”
“Hope the power outage in Spain and Portugal is sorted soon and I’m thinking especially of those who are reliant on power for their health needs,” said someone else. “P.S It feels a bit scary after recently watching the #apocalyptic film #LeaveTheWorldBehind.”
The movie was based on the 2020 novel by Rumaan Alam. As well as Julia and Ethan it starred Kevin Bacon and Mahershala Ali.
