Genesis legend Phil Collins was recently spotted in a rare selfie with his son Matthew as the football player kitted up for a match on the pitch against Hatberg on 17 May
Phil Collins has been seen in rare snap with his son.
The music legend was recently spotted cheering on his lad Matthew during a crucial footie match, wearing a cream zip-up jumper as he proudly watched the football player work his magic on the pitch.
Matthew wore a white and green football t-shirt as he leaned in next to his dad and smiled for the selfie. Phil is father to Matthew, Joely, Simon, Matthew and actress Lily Collins, known for her roles in Emily In Paris and Maxxxine.
Matthew laces up his boots for Austrian squad WSG Tirol, and Phil jetted over to catch his boy on the pitch. Sadly the team experienced a narrow loss to Hartberg 3-2 on Saturday 17 May.
Gaffer Manuel Ludwiger admitted he was clueless about his player’s famous dad until they did a bit of digging. “We Google the players we take on trial to find out about their past careers, it was only then that we found out Matthew is Phil Collins’ son.”
“We haven’t signed him as a publicity stunt. It is purely down to his footballing ability,” reports the Mirror.
Phil has previously boasted about his son’s footie dreams, recognising his potential to go pro from a young age: “Matt loves music, but loves his football even more.”
“He is certain he’ll turn professional. The other day he said: ‘Another five years and I’ll be gone.'”
Earlier this year, Genesis legend Phil Collins made a heart-wrenching admission about his struggles with illness, confessing that it has drained his passion for creating music.
The 74 year old multi-talented artist, who bid farewell to his illustrious career in 2022 due to intensifying physical constraints stemming from a spinal injury in 2007, shared a poignant update on his health woes including his 2017 diagnosis with type 2 diabetes.
In an interview with Mojo magazine, Phil expressed his dwindling enthusiasm for music: “I keep thinking I should go downstairs to the studio and see what happens but I’m not hungry for it anymore.”
The Grammy-winning icon and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee admitted: “The thing is, I’ve been sick, I mean very sick.”
Phil first shed light on his spinal issues in 2009, attributing them to his drumming posture: “My vertebrae have been crushing my spinal cord because of the position I drum in. It comes from years of playing.”
He elaborated on the severity of his condition, saying: “I can’t even hold the sticks properly without it being painful. I even used to tape the sticks to my hands to get through. Don’t worry, I can still sing.”
