Singer Andy Brown, from the boyband Lawson, has told fans there’s a “very high chance” he could develop Leukaemia if the rare blood disorder he’s been diagnosed with isn’t treated
Pop star Andy Brown has shared that he is undergoing chemotherapy after being diagnosed with a rare blood disorder.
The 38-year-old singer of English boyband Lawson has taken to the stage alongside the likes of pop-punk titan Avril Lavigne and fellow boyband The Wanted during his music career. He’s now decided to pursue a more ‘normal’ job and now works as a successful photographer.
The Lawson star has been living with a rare blood disorder for a decade and said there is a “very high” chance he could develop leukameia – a type of blood cancer – if he did not receive a stem cell transplant. Luckily, he’s found a donor and has been undergoing chemotherapy ahead of the transplant.
He took to Instagram with a black and white snap taken from his hospital bed. He told followers he was trying his best to stay positive but “wasn’t feeling his best” and was struggling to eat the hospital food.
He wrote: “Day 4 of chemo done [tick emoji]. It’s stepped up big time the last couple of days, not feeling the best at the moment, but there’s just no way round it. Three more days to go, then the new stem cells go in next Tuesday!
“Staying positive as much as I can, but I won’t pretend it’s easy. I’ve spent years being so mindful of what I put into my body, ten years sober, clean eating, all of it. So feeling what this chemo is doing hits hard. But I know it’s part of the fight. It’s about accepting it, getting through it, and coming back stronger.
“Also… can we talk about hospital food? The food here is challenging, to say the least. Hospitals are meant to heal us, but what they’re serving up feels like the opposite, there’s zero nutritional value in this food.
The father-of-two continued: “I know the NHS is under massive pressure, and this isn’t on the amazing staff looking after us. But food is fuel, and it matters. When I’m through this, I’m going to try and do something about it. Maybe I can get @jamieoliver on board!”
“Anyway, next week is when the real battle begins. That’s when the transplant happens, and my body starts the process of rebuilding from scratch. It’s a second chance at life, and not everyone gets that opportunity.
Andy added: “Stem cell donors are hard to find. You could literally be the match that saves a little girl’s life, a dad’s life, someone’s world. If you’re healthy and able, please consider signing up to the register. It takes minutes, but it can change everything for someone like me. This is just another chapter. Nothing is gonna stop me.”
Last month, Andy revealed his 10-year health battle. He wrote: “Morning! I just wanted to jump on here and give you a little update on what’s been going on with me lately. I’ve always found it hard sharing personal info on instagram, but this feels like a big one, and if it helps even one person, then it’s worth it!
“For the past 10 years, I’ve been living with a rare blood disorder. Up to now, it hadn’t massively affected my day to day life, apart from frequent blood tests and the occasional infection, but as things stand, if it’s not treated, I have a very high chance of developing Leukemia.
“I’ve been under close supervision at King’s College Hospital in London, which has one of the country’s leading hematology departments. And after a lot of discussions, we’ve come to the decision that the best way to prevent leukemia is for me to have a stem cell transplant.”
Lawson was named after David Lawson, a consultant neurosurgeon who performed life-saving surgery on Andy back in 2007. Andy was diagnosed with a non-cancerous brain tumour – an acoustic neuroma – which grows on the nerve of the inner ear.
He had the tumour – the size of a ping-pong ball – removed after a 17-hour surgery. The operation left him temporarily paralysed but he has since made a full recovery.
Lawson have scored five top 10 UK hits – including When She Was Mine – and their debut album, Chapman Square, reached number three on the UK Albums Chart. They released their latest album, CMD Z, in 2021.
