EXCLUSIVE: Ex royal butler Paul Burrell has opened up about his bond with the royal family as he prepares to tell-all in his new book as he is “no longer under their control”
Former royal butler Paul Burrell has spoken out about his experiences with the monarchy – as he claims “I am no longer under their control”.
Princess Diana’s ex-aide spoke exclusively to Daily Star, in collaboration with Casino.org, as he prepares to launch his new tell-all book, titled The Royal Insider.
Throughout his career, Paul has worked closely with Queen Elizabeth II, who he served as a footman for, before he went on to be a personal attendant and butler to Prince Charles and Princess Diana during their stay at Highgrove House.
When asked what he thinks the monarchy thinks of him, after years of speaking publicly about his experience working with them, he answered: “Well, I think at times they are puzzled by me. Because I’m the butler that got away.
“I know that the Royal Family is interested in what I have to say about my life and my time in Royal service, especially with what I did for The Queen and Princess Diana.”
Before reiterating that he is able to speak openly now about his time with the royals as he is now longer “under their control”.
“But, as I am no longer in service, I am no longer under their control. As I didn’t sign a confidentiality agreement or any Official Secrets Act, I am able to talk about my life experiences,” he added.
Paul further explained: “I think at times it is like walking a tightrope, trying to talk about the journey I’ve had without ruffling their feathers. I know they have been puzzled at times by things I’ve said and why I’ve said them.”
He also revealed that there are things he wishes the royals did differently over the years.
Paul added: “But I’ve always wanted to be truthful and honest while talking about that world and how it affected me. I think they understand that. They may have wished that I had done things differently at times, but then I also wish they had done things differently at times. It’s a two-way street, and loyalty is not a gift that you give freely; it is a gift that is earned.”
The I’m A Celeb star will be releasing his new book, titled Royal Insider, in September which will take a deep dive into his relationship with the late Queen.
Talking about his new book, Paul said: “I have maintained contact with the Royal Family over many years, and I have seen members of the Royal Family. However, I will be discussing that in more detail in my new book, The Royal Insider.
“My new book is coming out on September 11, and it’s a big part of the book in answering my critics and why I feel that I am the Royal Insider. Because I do have contact, and I have had contact with them for a very long time.”
