Rylan Clark weighs in on UK’s Eurovision chances as ‘all you need is the right song’

BBC presenter Rylan Clark maintains that the UK’s recent losses in Eurovision were due to song choice, and not down to politics like others have previously suggested

Rylan Clark is convinced the UK has got a good chance of winning this year’s Eurovision.

The presenter, who fronts coverage of the contest for the BBC, thinks our 2025 act Remember Monday will do us proud.

Trio Lauren Byrne, Holly-Anne Hull, and Charlotte Steele will be flying the flag for us with their song What The Hell Just Happened? The group identify as ‘country-pop’, having launched their star on the Voice in 2019.

Rylan said: “I’m really happy with our entry this year. I think we’ve got a great chance of winning. Our entry really has got a great chance.”

The UK hasn’t won the contest since Katrina And The Waves entered with Love Shine A Light for us in 1997. Many blame the long wait for another victory on politics, but Rylan thinks that’s rubbish.

He said: “All you need is the right song. People say it’s political, but Sam Ryder came second for us a few years ago.

“We had the right song with the right singer and we came second. And it was well deserved.

“I don’t think it’s always political. If we’ve got a great song and a great performer, we could take it.”

This year’s contest is being hosted in Basel in Switzerland. It’s the first time it’s been held in the country since 1989.

Rylan said: “Switzerland is going to be a great host country. I know they’re going to throw a really great Eurovision.”

Rylan’s co-host Scott Mills recently issued a stern warning to Remember Monday, advising them to avoid the ‘bad influence’ of his colleague.

On his BBC Radio 2 Breakfast Show, Scott said: “Our Rylan’s been on, ‘Tell them I can’t wait for a night out with the girls’.” This led to an excited reaction from the singers, but Scott had some words of caution.

“Look at me,” he said. “In the week of Eurovision, we can all have a night out before that. In the week of Eurovision, lock yourself in your room and if Rylan tries to contact you in any way, going, ‘Aw, let’s go on; let’s have one’, do not do that.

“Not one because I… let me tell you, from past experience, it doesn’t go well. And if I see you with him, I will be moving you away from him, alright?”
