Seth Rogen had a surprising note while working on Superbad, where Sony Pictures wouldn’t let Jonah Hill’s character interact with a PlayStation 2 despite one being in the film
Superbad’s tale of growing up and seeking social acceptance may be loud, brash, and downright lewd throughout, but there’s a well-meaning core to the movie in there somewhere.
Apparently, that’s not how Sony saw it, though. Speaking on the red carpet at SXSW, Seth Rogen, who wrote the movie, revealed that the company behind PlayStation had some concerns about one character in particular getting his hands on one of their consoles.
Speaking to Rotten Tomatoes, Rogen explained that while Michael Cera’s Evan was able to play the PS2 in the game’s ending, Jonah Hill’s Seth wasn’t able to because his character was deemed ‘vile’.

“On Superbad, we were told that Jonah Hill’s character, Seth, was so reprehensible to the studio that they were like, there’s a scene where they’re playing video games and (Sony) was like ‘Jonah can’t touch a PlayStation‘” Rogen explained.
“They were like ‘we can’t have him interact with our products, because it’s too vile a character’” he added.
“I was like ‘it’s based on me, that’s very insulting’, but we accommodated them, ultimately.”
While Cera’s character is based on co-writer Evan Goldberg, Hill is a semi-autobiographical portrayal of Rogen, but Sony wanted the character kept well away from its console regardless. And, with Sony Pictures co-financing the movie, it seems it wasn’t a request that could be turned down.
Rogen recently appeared as Donkey Kong in the Super Mario Bros. movie from Illumination, but thankfully it seems Nintendo didn’t have any issues with his appearance there.
